Based on R. Jambeck research (2015), Indonesia is the worlds 2 plastic bag producer to sea after Tiongkok. Based on that, starting February 21, grocery shopping using plastic bags has to pay, it is stated in the government policy number S.71/MenLHK-II/2015 about plastic bag buying policy. The government with Indonesian retail businessman will trial plastic bag buying starting February 21, at 23 cities.
Smart shopping without plastic bags. With the enactment of plastic bag buying policy, it is hoped that the consumer will be more reluctant about using plastic bags and will be more wise with using reusable bag. The funds that are collected from plastic bag selling will be used as a CSR fund for waste reduction.

this is a very nice initiative for waste reduction. A good percentage of wastes generated in urban cities emanate from plastic bags from stores and malls. kudos to the Indonesian government.

Yes, I agree with Reshma and Syed Ahmad. This is a breakthrough policy in Indonesia. But as M. Rafi says, there are still a lot of people who thinks that the price of plastic bag isn't much. Especially since the price of plastic bag is offered minimally 2 cent, it is much more cheaper than the price of plastic bag at the traditional market in the amount of 5 cent, and people still buy those.
DKI government gave a surprise by giving the price 50 cent, maybe by spending 50 cent, the buyers at Jakarta will think before buying and they will be more wise by using reusable bag. But the other reality is that buyers will use cardboard as an alternative, meaning we will cut down trees for the fulfilling of cardboard demands. Although what is hoped was using reusable bag

Unfortunately, today, I still found someone who think 'Ah, it's only 2 cent, then, it's ok for spending it to get some plastic' ....... Hopefully they realize that it's not about getting more 'advantage' but we're talking about environment :'

This is actually brilliant idea to discourage customers while buying groceries. They become intelligent to use their own bags and slowly make habit of it. Thanks for sharing :)

This is an effective policy that has been successfully implemented in different countries. Thus, this is a proven concept. It not only discourages the usage of plastic bags but also encourages shoppers to look for alternate methods of storing their shopping.
