In order to feed the growing global population, millions of dollars are being invested to invent new technologies for increasing global food production. It is estimated that the world population will reach 9 billion people by the year 2050 and at the current growth rate of food production, a massive food shortage will take place.
In developing countries such as Qatar, where there is little arable land and poor agricultural climate, Soilless farming can be used to increase food production. using advanced hydroponics and multi-story vertical growing, the proposed system utilizes nutrient enriched water to produce a yield that is 100 times greater when compared to crops grown on a conventional farmland of the same size.
A hybrid setup was made by Nik-Othman Abdullah, a bio technologist at Malaysia University of Science and Technology. He published his project in a peer reviewed journal Research Ideas and Outcomes. In his publication he described that this approach has the capacity to tackle the food-shortages and reduce massive import expenditures spent in Qatar. Reports state that Qatar spent USD 11 billion on imported food in 2014 alone.
Moreover, soilless farming will not only increase the quantity of crops produced but also improve the quality of crops as well. Since the crops will be grown indoors, they can be constantly monitored by a personnel with food technical knowledge. In addition, factors such as atmospheric conditions can be controlled in the farming unit.
This project has the capability to change the way food food is grown around the world. If it is implemented successfully in due time, there will be sufficient food for everyone. And with that we can hope that one day, no one on this planet will ever have to go to bed being hungry at night.
