Kenya should train her youth on environment protection |
---|
Kenya has a relatively low forest cover at only 7% of its territory which falls short of the required standards of the United Nations Environmental program (UNEP). Article 69 of the Kenyan constitution states that "the state shall work to achieve and maintain a tree cover of 10% of the land area of Kenya."
In the past environmental conservation has been faced by numerous challenges including a rapidly growing population, habitat destruction, overgrazing, deforestation, pollution, unsustainable harvesting of the natural resources and poor waste management. This challenges can be solved by public-private partnerships. To ensure sound management of the environment, it is imperative that tomorrows leaders be equipped today. We need to provide them with environmental education, and mentor them to become the next generation of conservation leaders by involving them in forest conservation activities such as tree planting. Parents teachers and guardians too have a role to play to ingrain in them environmental conservation practices to ensure that the country builds a sustainable future. |
