How Surabaya Citizens Get Along with Green Living Life Style

by | 26-11-2016 23:00 recommendations 0

Surabaya is the second biggest city in Indonesia after Jakarta. When we talk about big city, usually what's come up in our head is a busy, crowded and unhealthy environment place to live. But, unlike other big city, Surabaya is different. If you come to Surabaya, you'll find green spaces, green lanes, green villages, park, and mangrove forests easily.
Green living is not only about green spaces but also green lifestyle. In Surabaya, you can find car free day zone every weekend with many people doing sport together, or just people who work out daily at the parks. Not only that, when you come to some villages in Suarabaya, you'll find waste water treatment in each village. They recycled water to do the urban farming, to water flower, to clean motorcycles or cars and even some use it to fish farm inside the villages. And surprisingly, the number of green villages in Surabaya is increasing. How is that possible? As we know usually, it's really hard to motivate society to live a green living life style? How the Surabaya government can successfully encourage its society to work together to create green city together?
Surabaya government not only provides green lanes, green spaces, green parks that open for public freely. They also maintain it firmly. It shows their commitment to create green city. And by this action, the society of Surabaya slowly feel the benefit of green city. But it's not enough to make people aware and want to start green living. Surabaya government create a system where green living will give the society benefits financially. Finance is the key of all problems. First, Surabaya government initiating a collaboration with some universities in Surabaya. Then they pick some villages that want to give a try to change their way to live and their environment. They educate the people and give some ideas for examples applying independent waste water treatment system, organic fertilizer composters, urban farming in narrow spaces and even fish farming inside the villlages. After all are set, the government of Surabaya start promoting the green villages as tourism destinations in Surabaya City. Surprisingly, this green villages tourism destination idea bring benefit financially to the society itself and this is the strong motivation what makes the society also want to take part of maintaining this green living lifestyle in Surabaya. So that's why Surabaya is not just being "one night" green city.
