Kathmandu University WED - 2017 celebration committee has come up with a unique concept of renovating the first bus used by the university. This concept of recycling is not new to the world, however this concept is being initiated for the first time by the students of KU. The refurbished bus will be exhibited in university premises during the celebration of World Environment Day.
The bus which we have intended to use for our Green Bus and Park Project was bought in 1994 as a means of transport for students. On its first day, the bus was inaugurated by Mr. Sitaram Adhikari, the then registrar of KU, by travelling to the university in the bus. After the bus was well past its working condition, it was discarded on the grounds with no utility. Now, the committee has taken an initiative to convert it into a workable space which has both historical and antique value. This bus will be a model of recycling of idle and rejected vehicles now simply regarded as waste taking up space. Smart old bus recycling ideas can be financially rewarding and help build eco-friendly communities where people bond together. Our main goal is to minimize the waste by converting it into a new resource in optimum condition and hence contribute to environment and natural resources protection. The first mini bus owned by Kathmandu University is now dumped around some corner in the university. The bus is no longer in a condition to serve its purpose of transportation but can be definitely used as a Mini cafe with garden around. For this the renovation of the bus is the primary step. The hard labor work is expected to be accompanied by the university staffs and for the minor works such as painting the bus, interior designs of the cafe and others, the interested students will be mobilized. For the garden ?The Green Park?, the plantations will be carried out in up cycled bottles and jars, old tiers, suitable plastic bags etc. Seasonal plants and flowers need greater care so for initial phase non seasonal plants can be used. Such plants don?t need extra care and serve our purpose of ?The Green Park?. The possible locations with priority order as we have worked and observed are given below:
The location we chose aims to utilize the now vacant areas within the premises of Kathmandu University and add to the beauty of the University structures and environment. We will be finalizing the location with the discussion with the University and concerned authorities. OUTCOMES
It creates an image for those people who were not aware about the environment day, so it is also a long term investment. |

This is such an eye catching and innovative idea, Kshitiz!
Nepal is a unique nation blessed with abundance of natural beauty and biodiversity. I am really impressed with the youth of Pakistan who are actively engaged in eco conservation projects.
Thanks to Tunza Egen too, for connecting us all, so that we can inspire and get inspired by student leaders around the world.

Wow! That's a great initiative by the students of Kathmandu University. This bus is an excellent way to promote recycling and encourage more students to be eco friendly. I really hope such buses as incorporated in other parts of the world. Thank you for sharing:)

Reusing and Recycling this 'not being used' bus is a great way to retain this first bus of the university, as memory or heritage and to promote recycling by showcasing recycled items. I am sure it will attract attention and will encourage people for recycling. I love this Green Park on the bus. Thanks for sharing.
