Sanitation In Teacher Nkwanta
Teacher Nkwanta is a small town in Kenyasi in the Ashanti region . Teacher Nkwanta is having a huge mountain which we were told that in the early 90s ,people from Europe used to mine the mountain for stones and sand for a lot of purposes such as the construction of roads, buildings and many others. These created employment and raised the name of the town, day in day out at least 30 new aliens enter this small town with the reason for searching job opportunities. This was a good start , this town grew at a very fast rate with the population about 1000, constructions began everywhere in this town, chiefs got monies from the sales of land to aliens without giving plans to the community, this has making the leaving in the area for the past decade very sad and disturbing. Because of the unplanned selling of the lands, people in this community are facing many problems notably is poor sanitation .People are not having a defined place for throwing of rubbish or other unwanted materials. There was a rule all over that anybody who doesn?t keep his or her surroundings clean can be sue to court by the town council. This was making living in this peaceful community a bit difficult, so one man who is having Baba as his name came with an idea to weed a place in the bush so we will throw refuse there, it was a good news but nobody help this man except I and a few members of our young peace brigates group. This improved the surroundings and made the surroundings like heaven, our sanitation was the best as compared to places around Teacher Nkwanta .For the past 4 months, when the rain started, the growth of weeds around the refuse damp site is alarming, snakes and other dangerous creatures have taken that place as their hide outs or habitats which has increased the fear of the People in the community. Town councils are also on working mode, never make this easy for the people of the community. This is compelling the people to throw garbage ,rubbish and other waste materials all over the place. They throw it on the road side so when the town councils ask they say it is the people who pass by make it, and they are not their labors to work on the rubbish, this rubbish are left hence changing the natural smell of the place. |

Abass, thanks for sharing this concern about improper waste disposal and sanitation problems in Nkwanta. As Arushi has summed up, while the government needs to provide for equipment and infrastructure at a macro level, educational campaigns and awareness programs at a micro level can help in educating the people and lead to a positive change. Kudos to people with civic sense- like you and Baba for your efforts. Wish you the very best in improving the situation through your work.

It is so sad to know about such pathetic state of sanitation and waste management in Nkwanta. It is obviously an un-sustained development of this town which grew in population but not in infrastructure. There is a dire need of not only the effective public educational campaigns and community-based sensitization programmes but also proper waste collection equipment and landfill sites for proper waste disposal. Wise and eco-conscious people like Baba and you can probably spread awareness and bring the issue to the attention of local municipalities else it may be a risk to the health of people. Thank you for sharing. Take care.
