Food insecurity: subverting the development effort of Ethiopia |
---|
Food insecurity is being a severe problem around the world. More than 700million people are undernourished across the globe. Remarkable progresses have been made towards hunger in some countries of the world but yet there are some countries that are suffering from food insecurity, namely Asia and Africa. Food security means having access to sufficient healthy food to be well and active. Agriculture is important for food security. It produces the food people eat and it provides the primary source of livelihood for the world?s total workforce. Agriculture is Ethiopia?s largest economic sector and because of climate change Ethiopia is put at risk and vulnerability to food insecurity are increasing. This is happening as result of rainfall variation, drought, global warming, and soil degradation and so on. Global warming increases accumulation of greenhouse gases which traps more heat in the atmosphere. Higher global warming means maximum surface air temperatures which results higher rates of evaporation , changes in degree of humidity and atmospheric pressure , changes in cloud cover, higher global warming means precipitation more rainfall, duration and intensity of droughts , greater seasonal weather variability ? Etc. The production of agriculture, forestry and fisheries in Ethiopia are affected by climate change and so livelihoods and access to food are affected. This results famine, and also has effects on food system (the production, processing, distribution, preparation and consumption of food and the outcomes of these activities contributing to food security). A lot of people are suffering from food insecurity in Ethiopia. More than 2million people require emergency livelihood and food assistance in the Somali region. Lives are being lost mothers seeing their children suffer from hunger, a nation losing its people. We can still try to make a difference and reduce the variation of climate. By creating awareness in our society, promoting afforestation, reforestation and get into gardening, agroforestry, motivate the use of green architecture, eliminate the burning of coal, oil (fossil fuel), reduce waste, support people who are fighting to make a difference on climate change, Etc. We can make the world a better place if we try. References Climate risk and food security in Ethiopia:analysis of climate impact on food security and livelihoods.
