Turbidity For Fish Culture

by Kushal Naharki | 06-02-2018 01:48 recommendations 0

Turbidity refers to the decreased ability of water to transmit light caused by suspended particulate matter in the water column of the pond ranging from colloidal to course. Transparency is opposite to turbidity.

Causes of Turbidity
  • Planktons
  • Suspended particles of silts and clay
  • High concentration of humic substance

Sources of Turbidity
  • External Sources: Surface runoffs, construction, livestock, rainfall, wind, etc.
  • Internal Source: Resuspension of particles, fecal material, feed, fertilizer, lime etc.

Effects of Turbidity
  • Reduce light penetration
  • Respiration problem in fish
  • Siltation of bottom substrate and reduce pond depth
  • Adsorbs and desorbs the nutrients of pond water
  • Effects vision of fish
  • Acidifies and sterilizes the water due to humic substance
Turbidity Measurement
Turbidity in water can be measured by:
  • Secchi disk visibility method
  • Suspended solids measurement method
  • Nephelomrtric method

Turbidity Management in Fish Pond
  • Fertilize pond periodically to maintain turbidity.
  • Remove some pond water and add new clear water to reduce all types of turbidity.
  • Use positively charged electrolytes such as aluminium sulphates
  • Limimg the pond @500 kg/ha to prevent acidic condition due to humic substance.
  • Keep the turbid water at silting tank for some times before use in fish pond.
  • The most usual and easiest way to cope with clay turbidity is by adding 15 to 22 bales of hay per hectare or 3:1 mixture of cottonseed meal and superphosphate at 110 kg/ha.
