The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) estimates Indonesia will become the world's largest geothermal power producer by 2021. In the next four years, the capacity of Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) will beat the world's largest geothermal power producer, the United States (US). Director of Geothermal Directorate General of Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Yunus Saefulhak said in 2021 the installed capacity of PLTP in Indonesia reaches more than 3,550 Megawatts (MW). "In 2021 we are optimistic to be number one," he said in Jakarta, Tuesday (17/10). For information, Indonesia is currently in the third position in terms of geothermal utilization after the Philippines. Currently, PLTP capacity in the US is estimated to be stagnant at 3,450 MW. Meanwhile, the Philippines' PLTP capacity is estimated to decrease from the current installed capacity of about 1,870 MW. For 2017, the installed capacity target is set at 1,858.5 MW as well as the geothermal road map that has been prepared. Yunus is optimistic that the target can be met. "At present, geothermal installed capacity until October 2017 has reached 1,808.5 MW, the end of the target year will be achieved," he said. The government continues to maximize the utilization of geothermal. Geographically located on the path of fire, Indonesia has abundant geothermal potential and can be utilized as an energy source for power generation. Currently, 331 potential points are scattered in 30 provinces ranging from Sumatra Island, Java, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, to Sulawesi with reserves of 17,506 MW and resources of 11,073 MW. However, the utilization of geothermal energy for electricity generation is only about 10% of the existing reserves so that opportunities for geothermal energy development are still very wide open. Separately, Chairman of the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society (METI) Suryadharma strongly supports the utilization of geothermal energy as a primary energy source in Indonesia. Therefore, geothermal is a clean energy source of low emissions so as not to damage the environment. Therefore, Suryadharma asks the Government to continue to campaign geothermal benefits to the wider community. With a good understanding of society, Suryadharma said, this will prevent rejection of geothermal development. "If the community understands the support, this should be improved, if left alone, it will be counterproductive," he said.
