?The Greatest Threat to Our Planet Is The Belief That Someone Else Will Save It?, Robert Swan. 5th of June, 2018 more than 100 countries celebrated the World Environment Day. World Environment Day has been one of the principal vehicles through which United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances the political attention and action. This year the whole world celebrated Environment Day with the theme of the year ?Beat Plastic Pollution?. The agenda for WED is to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues, and advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future. The day also promotes people to change their attitude towards the environment.
?Plastic?, is versatile, lightweight, flexible, moisture resistant strong and relatively inexpensive. Thus it leads to voracious appetite and overconsumption of such goods. Plastic pollution, the important and lethal word now-a-days has been epidemic. Plastic pollution generally encompasses the gathering of plastic products in the environment. Thousands of plastic factories are producing tons of plastic goods which are popularly used by the people because of their ease, cheapness and convenience. We throw away enough plastic which accumulates in the earth to circle the Earth four times every year, the accumulated plastic have adverse effect on wildlife, wildlife habitat, or humans. The pollution may not be visible to naked eyes; microscopic but Plastic is now ubiquitous in our terrestrial, aquatic and airborne environments - that is, it's everywhere. Plastic materials are very durable and degrade very slowly thus ultimately becomes the pollutant with staying power. We buy 1 million plastic bottles every minute and at least 1 million tonnes of plastic leaks in ocean annually. Most of the waste doesn?t make it into landfill, but instead ends up in ocean, where it is responsible for killing one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals every year. It is reported that 60-90% marine litter is made up of plastic. Not only is the marine but of course the terrestrial region is equally bearing adverse effect. It is estimated that 3.3% of plastic is used in agricultural activities. Plastic is everywhere even in those item too which we may not expect it to be. Trash dump and landfills are the major and unfortunate problems. The pollutants enter into ground and results polluting the groundwater in long term. Plastics and plastics products impose negative impact and threat not only at the service life of plastic but even after discarded and wreak havoc on natural environment. When destroyed the decomposition of plastic requires almost 1000 years. The residue produces several chemicals which contribute to air pollution, land pollution, water pollution and the production of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) and ultimately to global warming. The area exposed with plastics and plastic garbage will never stop releasing toxins in that area. As it is found in every size and amount, tiny to large organisms are affected due to the release of toxic chemicals. The whole ecosystem is being affected due to plastic pollution.
The pollutant is found to stuck on the poles, trees, towers and the fences of our vicinity which leads to suffocations and untimely death. As well the tourism area is equally affected. Though the society is already facing several detrimental effects on the livelihood and on the environment and the adverse impact is paramount, Present livelihood devoid of utilization of plastic goods is impossible to imagine.
Getting acquainted with all these ill-effects of plastic, it is important that one needs to take actions to beat plastic pollution. In reality, the only way of beating this problem is addressing the ill effects by the individuals and the companies around the world. In fact, all the plastic users know how to deal with and reduce plastic but are ignoring the facts and solutions. There are so many eco-friendly practices that we can contribute to reducing the plastic wastes. The small contribution of ours could bring the great impact. Some of the ideas are like carrying the reusable bags while shopping, reusing the bags as much as possible times, getting rid of the plastic bottles for the purpose of drinking water, educating the local people about the effect of plastic and speak about the option for packaging, storing and bagging the items. The higher level involvement can make it easy to reduce the plastic pollutant such as lawmakers. Taking the dumping and littering seriously can be another action to beat the plastic pollution. Last but not the least option is recycling everything. Trying and selecting the items that can be recycled and reused, checking everything before putting it in the trash. Though recycling plastic doesn't means breaking plastic and converting it into new items, recycling means still plastic just being used for different purpose.
Different sectors including governmental agencies, INGOs/NGOs, etc are taking different steps from their respective positions. However, the activities have not been able to uproot the severe impacts brought up by plastic. Concluding with a well-known proverb - Prevention is better than cure, let?s start taking action to halt the source of this severe and constant threat. Together we can ?Beat Plastic Pollution?.

Hello Sushila, Namaste
I believe cleaning is never a good solution to control pollution. In a city, village or in a community every people must know about the negative aspect of plastic and hazardous effect in environment in period of time.
Different organization and policy makers are cleaning roads and riverside with their full effort in Nepal and rest of world, is this solving the problem? Parallel program should be conducted to aware people that plastic is never a thing to throw it must be recycle. Until and unless people become aware about worst part of plastic we can never control its pollution.
From my point of view awareness program among people about every aspect of plastic pollution and conducting cleanliness program including them will be effective and will help to beat plastic pollution.
