With increase in all the new water purifier companies, clean drinking water is something about which people are really concerned today . Most of the families are now having a water purifier in their houses. Well, the question is do they really need it. Being concerned is not enough we need to know the exact reason of using a gadget that do we really need something. ROs are widely used in India and rest of the world nowadays. Wastage of water through Reverse osmosis is something people from regions with enough availability of clean water needs to know about like mine Patna, capital city of an eastern state of India. The RO con is on, and it is alarming to see how many middle class people are being conned in Bettiah, where the water contains a lot of natural minerals and essential salts. A paper on ?Assessment Of Ground Water Quality In Patna, Bihar, India? by Saba Hasnain, Subodh Narayan and Chandrawati (2008), based on 100 samples of groundwater from 10 selected sites representing all the three zones of Patna (eastern, central and western) were analysed for physicochemical characteristics with special reference to its vital parameters, i.e. Conductivity, pH, Total Hardness, Total Alkalinity, Sulphate, Nitrate, and so on. The results were compared with standard Indian and International norms. The groundwater quality of Patna was found to be well within the national and international norms. The Shree Krishna water and nutrient testing laboratory and research centre, popularly known as Shree Krishna Gyan Mandir (SKGM), come out with a ?startling revelation? that tap water from Patna railway station platforms is ?healthier than most of the branded bottled water being sold there?. It is important to know that, RO do provide us safe drinking water but these are beneficial for places with saline and brakish water but not to a place like Patna with enough clean water availability. Using RO purifiers are nothing but just wastage of huge liters of water for these regions. Startling fact, a 8 liters capacity RO purifier dumps 24- 32 liters of water with every refill. And in one day a family of 5 refills it at least thrice, which means a single family dumps 72- 128 liters in a single day. While this water can be successfully used for watering plants, bathing(sometimes), toilet flushing, washing car/ utensils, you can also connect the waste water outlet pipe to your toilet, swiping floor and in water coolers. Now you can only imagine an aggregate wastage of water in a single day from places like these.
