Urban Flooding:A threat for agriculture.

by Shreya Aryal | 19-08-2019 23:58 recommendations 0

Agriculture in Nepal is not just a occupation but its a way of life. There is a simultaneous relationship between nature and agriculture. We are suffering a lot due to the climate change and its effect where flooding is one of the problem during rainy season in various parts. Urban areas are highly effected and  seem to be drown inside the flood. This has caused the adverse effect  on agriculture. The flooding in urban area that occurs almost every year results in the huge  destruction of the properties and agricultural stuffs.
Agriculture in our country accounts for 60 percent of Total GDP of the country which clearly shows that it is the basis of livelihood of almost all of the people in rural areas and few of urban areas too. Although urban area doesn't consists of much people involved in agriculture the day to day feeding for the people is possible only when the grown stuffs reach there. Almost all  grown agricultural products are brought in urban areas to sell them. The inputs required for growing the crops like seed, insecticides, pesticides are transported from the urban area. Many people of our country still depends solely on agriculture to run their household activities. The food of about 23 lakhs people in Kathmandu is supplied daily. So we can imagine how much the delay of food supply can effect people residing there. The  flood destroys all this stuffs which effects the livelihood of the people .
Still in many places of  Kathmandu ,people sell the vegetables and other crop stuffs to spend their livelihood. People of ramkot area  bring the agricultural stuffs in doko to the main market area to sell them which are highly effected when the city is flooded. We can see the people in kalimati area selling fruits and vegetables in the footpaths and ground. Such people are highly effected by flood. Agricultural stuffs being perishable cannot be preserved for long time due to lack of proper storage mechanism. This cause the huge loss in agriculture. It takes about 3-4 months to grow the stuffs which are wasted in few hours. If the flood enters in the crop field due to stagnation all crops dies. This type of loss discourage people to get involved in agriculture. Many agricultural stuffs, seeds are stored in godown and the flood entering inside the godown ultimately results in the loss of all those stuffs with a unbearable loss.Due to the flooding transportation of grown crops, vegetables and fruits becomes tedious. All these incidents caused due to flood are inter -related with each other and these all are directly related to agriculture. Lack of security to farmers about their products has led them to get diverted in other occupations except farming. Farmers are discouraged due to the huge loss and hard work to grow the crops .This condition result in less people being involve in agriculture and ultimately importing of every single stuffs from the other nation .The flooding in urban area cause delay in the timely transportation of the raw materials and fertilizers which will cause the decrease in production. Although Nepal is a agricultural country we are still unable to get independent on ourself and are importing huge percentage of fruits, vegetables , and   other food stuffs from the neighbouring countries. It is already a great loss for us and the flooding that occurs almost every year adds in our loss as peoples interest on being involved in agriculture are seen very rare. This not only cause the loss in economic condition of the nation but also the loss in sector of agriculture.

It is utmost to follow the   proper security ideas as soon as possible. Proper flood management techniques are to be adopted in order to make the agriculture more secure and decrease the loss. The government should bring the insurance scheme to make the farmer feel secure about their farming and should compensate their loss. The flood based farming system can also be introduced in the places with high risk of flood .In urban areas urban agricultural techniques and proper management of the flood  can be introduced. Emphasis can be given to discover new ideas and techniques that would decrease the loss being faced by the farmers rather than diverting their mind to other fields. Ideas can be generated from other countries also where the government has established various  companies and conduct Flood insurance programs as well like in USA.
Its never too late to bring a positive change. The flooding in urban areas is undoubtedly a great threat to the agriculture in Nepal .Initiatives are to be carried out in time so that the condition would get better. We cannot stop the flooding but we can definitely reduce the bad consequences and can make proper way to get out through it.
