Awareness on effects of chemical pesticides on environment

by Shishir Dahal | 12-01-2020 22:36 recommendations 0

Hey, I am Shishir Dahal (Nepal)
Chemical pesticides are the source of food adulteration and contamination at present era. In order to control various Pests (Insect, Disease, Weeds, Mites etc) during farming process, various chemical pesticides are sprayed over the crops. For the human beings, its very easy to spray with a small spraying tank. But they are hazardous to environment and ecosystem including human health. Fresh vegetables or fruits may be treated with pesticides. Regular consumption of such foods can also harm our health.
Since the time of Green revolution, the use of chemical pesticides are being sprayed a lot every year. Many pesticide manufacturing companies are getting huge benefits by selling such poisons. Now, we are forced to take chemically treated foods. One of the current research done by Indian Medical Research Council shows that harmful pesticides like Endosulfan were found to be 400 times higher than limit in mother's milk. It means we are feeding our kids with pesticides.
98% of total sprayed pesticides are absorbed by environment. Only 2% of them reach up to the target pest. It means that nearly 100% of pesticide is damaging our environment directly or indirectly. After application of such pesticides water, air and soil get polluted for long period of time. The aquatic or soil ecosystem get effected badly.
Not only this, various beneficial insects like honey bee, lady bug, dragon fly etc die due to such chemicals. Pesticides break the natural system of existence. For example: Aphids are the harmful insects of mustard, cauliflower, cabbage etc which damage the crop by sucking. If we sprayed pesticides to control it, lady bug beetle ( predator insect of aphids) will die. Remaining beetles will not get aphids as food. This could effect the entire energy transfer system of nature. After prolong period of time, this effect can be seen in secondary and tertiary consumers.
Similarly, direct exposure of chemical pesticides with human body can lead to death. Cancer, neurological problems, infertility, eye and skin diseases can also be seen as chronic effects.
To aware the negative impacts of such harmful pesticides, I had conducted one day interaction program on the topic of "effects of chemical pesticides on human beings, environment and ecosystem" last week. Our team went to agriculture colleges and schools near our residence. Participants became shocked by knowing such harmful effects of pesticides. Some of them joined us to conduct more programs. Thanks
