Simple Strategies To Make Your Home More Environmentally Healthy

by Finn Pierson | 18-03-2020 11:05 recommendations 0

Environmental concerns have taken center stage as climate change affects more and more people. The little things you do at home can have a big impact beyond those four walls. Learn how to take simple steps to make your house a healthier and greener place.

Cut Back on Electricity Usage

Install a programmable in your home. Set it up to turn the heat or air conditioning on when you most need it. This lets you avoid keeping the house warm (or cool) all day while you are at work, but you still get to come home to a comfortable temperature. If you prefer to let technology work for you a little more, invest in a smart thermostat that can be operated remotely from your phone or computer.

Swap out traditional bulbs with more energy-efficient ones. LED bulbs offer the best savings in most cases. They use about one-quarter of the power compared to an incandescent bulb and last up to 25 times as long. Plus, they don't generate heat so you won't be fighting against the air conditioning during the hot summer months.

Use surge protectors to keep electronics managed. When you aren't going to be using them, switch the strip off. This will prevent them from drawing power, which most appliances and gadgets do even while in the sleep or off mode.

An added bonus to cutting power strips is that you won't have annoying indicator lights in your bedroom while you are trying to sleep. These small disturbances can actually impede your ability to fall asleep and stay that way throughout the night.

Switch Up Your Cleaning Routine

One way to reduce the negative impact of your family's activities is to green up your cleaning routine. The harsh chemicals and questionable ingredients in many cleaners are not only harmful to the environment, but they can also affect your health.

There are plenty of green cleaning products on the market today. If you prefer to make your own, you have plenty of options. Do a quick search online for DIY cleaning recipes. A few basic supplies are all you need to start making effective and natural cleaners. Stock up on these so you always have them on hand:

  • white vinegar

  • baking soda

  • Castile soap

  • essential oils

  • hydrogen peroxide

  • vegetable oil

You might choose to add a few custom ingredients to the list, just be sure to look for high-quality natural ingredients. This will help ensure that your products are both effective and safe. Young Living Essential Oils makes several blends that are great for disinfecting and cleaning.

Add Some Pants

Houseplants have a way of brightening a room and can make you feel better. Harness that power by adding a few to your living areas and bedrooms. Some common houseplants are quite poisonous, so take care to look for types that are safe for kids and pets if you have either.

Not all plants thrive indoors. If you want to exercise your green thumb, look for a space in the yard where you can add a garden. Growing your own food is good for the environment and great for your health. it can also encourage kids to experiment with new fruits and vegetables.

You don't need a huge amount of space for a very productive garden. Intensive growing techniques and raised beds can help maximize the output of a small garden.

Conserve Water

Water is a precious resource that needs to be protected. It is important for the planet, animals, and for you. There are many small ways you can conserve water around the house. Try turning the faucet off when you brush your teeth. If you spot any leaks, fix them right away.

Disconnect automatic sprinklers and only water lawns and gardens when they actually need it. The plants will actually develop healthier roots this way so that they are better prepared to handle stress in the future.

There are plenty of simple things you can do to improve the environment at home. As you implement them, you will be helping your family stay healthy and happy while protecting natural resources.
