Constructed Wetland

by Anjila Pandey | 31-03-2020 17:49 recommendations 0

Firstly, Waste water management  is a process used to convert

wastewater into an effluent, that can be returned to water-cycle

with minimal impact on the environment.

Constructed Wetlands (CW) are artificial wastewater

which have been planted with aquatic plants and which depends upon natural microbial, biological, physical and chemical processes to treat waste-water.

CW is also known as Reed beds, soil infiltration beds, engineered

wetlands. CW is for the treatment  of municipal or industrial wastewater, grey water or storm-water  runoff.

Constructed Wetlands in Nepal

Environment and public health organization (ENPHO), a national non-governmental organization, has introduced  first CW as  low cost and effective  option for wastewater treatment and recycling in 1997.The  1st CW was built at Dhulikhel Hospital under design and technical supervision of a Ph.D. scholar  from university of Agricultural Sciences, Vienna, Austria. This technology has been replicated at several places such as Lalitpur, Pokhara,Tansen and so on.

How does wetland improve water quality?

  • Settling of suspended particular matter.

  • Filtration and chemical precipitation through contact of water with substrate.

  • Chemical transformation.

  • Adsorption and ion exchange on the surface of plants, substrate,

  •  sediment and litter.

  • Breakdown and transformation of pollutants by microorganisms

  • and plants.

  • Uptake and transformation of nutrients by microorganisms.

  • Predation and natural die-off of pathogens.

  • Less expensive to build than other treatment option.

  • Operation and maintenance expenses are low.( energy and

  •  supplies)

  • Require only periodic, rather than continuous, on-site labor.

  • Able to tolerate fluctuations in flow.

  • Facilitate water reuse and recycle

To conclude, CW is one of the best practice for controlling urban runoff. Also, the use of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment and storm water control is fairly a recent development. There is yet no consensus on the optimal design of wetland nor is there much information on their long-term performance.

    Hello Anjila,

really constructed wetland are of great importance with a view of water re-use and recycle. Also these constructed wetland havebeen nowadays modified and made fit for agricultural use as a source of irrigation during dry periods.

    Thank You!!!!
