Environmentally Friendly Updates to Improve Your Home

by Carol Evenson | 10-04-2020 03:29 recommendations 0

If you have an older home, you may be considering some updates to make your home more appealing and add some conveniences. When you are considering which features you wish to add to your home, it is a good option to consider some environmentally friendly updates. These will help you to save money and will add value to your home.

Solar Panels

Solar panels are devices that are installed on the roof of your home to harness the sun's energy, which is then converted into electricity to power and heat your home. They are a great option to consider adding to your home, especially if you live in an area with high sun. Consider getting a quote from Solar Albuquerque to determine the costs.

Solar energy is a truly clean energy source with no negative impact on the environment. Solar panels will save you money on your energy bill. If you produce more energy then you need, you could potentially be paid for the extra energy.

There are many different options for installing solar panels, so you're sure to find one to fit your budget. You can purchase them outright, or there are also options to lease or loan the panels. This is where the company covers the cost of installation and you pay for the energy that you use, and potentially a monthly service fee.

Rainwater Collection

Water conservation is a big part of being environmentally friendly. You could install a collection unit for rainwater and use the water for your decorative plants or in your garden. There are many attractive options available, some that have a spigot installed to let you easily drain the tanks when full and attach a hose.

Windows and Doors

A good option that will save you money on your energy bills is to install new windows and doors or service the ones you have now. If your windows and doors aren't sealed correctly, they can let heat out and cold air in. This will cost you a lot of money.

Check your home and if you find any cracks or gaps, or if the seal isn't tight, consider replacing the door or window. Another option is to repair it or fill the gap with spray foam or caulk.

You could also consider installing larger windows, depending upon where your home is located, and if you get access to full sun. If this is the case, larger windows can provide your home with natural lighting and heat to cut down on energy costs.

Evaluate the rest of your home for any leaks. Look over the duct work, basement, and attic. Identifying and repairing any issues that you find now, will save you money on your heating bill, and potentially stop the need for any expensive work if the issue worsens. If there is air coming in through an area like your attic, insulation could be added to rectify the situation.

Radiant Floor Heating

Radiant floor heating is another update you can consider for your home. This is a luxurious addition that will also save you money in the long run. Radiant floor heating is installed below your floors to provide heat from the ground up. This allows your home to be more comfortable and warm since heat rises. There is the added benefit of having no cold spots since the heat is coming from the floor and not from a radiator that may leave some areas of your home feeling drafty.

Composite Wood

If you are considering an update or addition of a deck to make your home more appealing and functional, consider using composite wood. This product uses wood pieces that would normally be considered waste, along with recycled plastic, instead of standard hardwood.

This material is beneficial for you to use on an outdoor deck because it will last much longer than traditional wood decks. It also resists damage and doesn't splinter or warp as quickly, saving you maintenance costs for repairs and upkeep.

There are many upgrade options that you can consider for your home. Many of these will add value to your home, increase your comfort level, and improve its aesthetic quality. And they have the added advantage of being more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
