The disappearance of Sparrrows |

Most of us have a childhood memory of waking up to the sparrow chirps. The small birds used to be all over the verandas and the balconies early in the morning. However, over the time, these birds started vanishing and their place was taken by long electric cables in the balcony and their nests were replaced by the concrete jungles of the city.
So what went wrong over the years? Where have the sparrows disappeared? As the concrete jungle spreads across cities and semi-urban spaces, hundreds of sparrows have taken a flight to never come back. World Sparrow Day is a day designated to raise awareness of the house sparrow and then other common birds to urban environments, and of threats to their populations, observed on 20 March. The depletion of habitat at urban and semi-urban spaces has been going on at an alarming rate, which is the reason behind the disappearance of common small birds like sparrow. The only way to bring them back is by people’s participation. We need storytellers, sparrow feeders, photographers, bloggers, poets and volunteers and people from all walks of life to do their bit to create a harmonious space for the house sparrows to co-exist with human beings Common sparrows are going extinct because of mindless urbanisation. They are losing not just their natural habitats but also the essential human touch they need and thrive upon. ... The indifference caused by a lack of emotional connect has pushed these birds to the edge of extinction Many native species enjoy black oil sunflower seeds, but house sparrows do not. Avoid foods sparrows favor, such as millet, milo, wheat, and cracked corn. Place nest boxes away from human activity and buildings (about 300 feet). If sparrows disappeared, the food web would be broken and reorganised. Humanity would suffer from the increased pests. So I'm just gonna list out the reasons for their rapidly diminishing numbers : 1. Modern architectureWith small old houses with roofs and holes converting into ultra stylish flats with sleek walls, there is no room for sparrows to build their nests and survive. 2. No grainsThe packaged food culture and supermarkets like food bazaar have completely outdated the concept of grains being sold openly in shops. The grains spilling out from gunny bags were the major source of the omnivorous sparrows' food. 3. Big birdsThe small number of places and holes for building nests are now occupied by big birds like pigeons, crows and thus outdating the small bird population. 4. Excessive use of insecticidesInsects are part of newborn baby sparrow's diet and since due to excessive use of mosquito repellents and insecticides, sparrows are unable to feed them to their offsprings. This has resulted in a decline in sparrow's infant mortality rate. 5. Mobile radiationScientists consider mobile radiation the major culprit for the disappearance of sparrows. Birds navigate by sensing the earth's magnetic fields and mobile radiations are known to disturb them and interfering with bird's ability to move around. |

I think more than a half population in the world are still unaware about the common sparrows and the reasons behind their disappearance as I was. So it's urgent to spread awareness on this topic. Thank you for acquainting us with world sparrow day and a gloomy truth going through them.
