International Day for Biological Diversity

"Our solutions are in nature" – our answers can only be found in nature and it is our utmost priority to preserve it.

International Day for Biological Diversity or World Biodiversity Day is observed every year on May 22 to promote biodiversity issues, this was enacted by the United Nations in the year 2006 during the 61st session of the UN¡¯s general assembly. This year is quite spectacular because Covid 19 has restricted movement which is very key in terms of campaigns to preach about the World Biodiversity to the masses. But that notwithstanding, social media is available for holding campaigns so the international Day for Biological Diversity.

Four days have been set aside to celebrate this day in the year 2020. On the 18th we have the Polar Beer which basically talks about Science and Traditional knowledge. The polar beer is the youngest and largest of the world's bear species — a mighty hunter and fierce defender of its young that's among the world's most vulnerable animals. This polar beer is at risk of extinction because the artic sea ice is melting due to massive changes in climate. So this beer is the frontline for other species who are at risk of extinction or a total wipeout due to climate change but with traditional and science knowledge, we could find a better ways to help curb the problems of climate and save this vulnerable species of animals.

19th of May also presents the Goose which also stands for conservation of biodiversity. The goose is a flying bird whose movements or routes to feeding are changing due to changes in climate. So our main aim on this day would be to raise awareness on some protected areas such as rainforest and national parks which serve as habitat for most vulnerable animals such as the goose. These animals are victims of predation, hunting and even extinction but with the right knowledge of conversation of biodiversity for the general good of living things, we could curb this.

On the 20th of May, we have the bee which symbolizes food, health, and biodiversity. The bee as we know gives food in the form of honey which is used around the world for many things including medicine. The bee also serves a very important agent of pollination. Our crops grow on our farm lands because insects and some animals which serve as agents of pollination makes it easier for them to get pollinated and bear fruits. When we eat good food, we can stay healthy to conserve biodiversity.

The final day May 21st, we have a girl which symbolizes people, culture and biodiversity. At the end of the day, it would all come down to the fact that humanity matters the most but for humanity to survive, it has a major role to play. Thus, protect the environment to make it a better place for all. I am really looking up to this very important day of biodiversity which would be on the 22nd May 2020, all should endeavor to be part of it.
