Crisis within a Crisis

by Prajwal Shrestha | 17-05-2020 17:02 recommendations 0

COVID-19 a new strain of corona virus has created havoc in this 21st century killing thousands and infecting millions worldwide.  António Guterres the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations, has warned this corona-virus pandemic is becoming a human rights crisis. The
pandemic as caused increase in hate speech, domestic violence, sexual harassment and many more towards vulnerable groups such as foreign laborers. They are now losing their savings daily as most of the industries are shut in fear of COVID-19 and finding it hard to have even simple
meals. Refugees, laborers are most vulnerable in getting the virus as they do not have proper health facility, sanitation education or even care from the government they reside in. Those lucky enough to return to their homeland, for example: many of the foreign employment seekers have
returned to Nepal and are spending their time with their family members. With this influx of the laborers to their homeland the government of any country have a huge chance of saving the laborers and investing them in their own country. If government can prepare plans and policies to attract the foreign employers then that can aid in future economic development of any country.

With the effect on vulnerable groups the new pandemic crisis is also questioning food security around the world as farmers are having a hard time to work in their field as well as market their produce. Even if there are enough produce to feed the entire country due to the lack of government action and policies to aid the farmer the valuable produce is not able to be marketed properly and feed the entire nation which has now cause a crisis within a crisis i.e. food crisis. The government needs to implement and formulate attractive plans involving private sectors to attract those workers who have returned to their homeland to participate in Agri-related works and in the end, aid the national economy, help in making a country self-sustained in basic crops and help in
maintaining the food security and attain the SDG-2 i.e. zero hunger.
