Sustainable cities and green roofs

What is a sustainable city?

Sustainable cities are those with a balanced ecosystem and most probably with the availability of all sorts of ecosystem services in a blend with urban advantages. Sustainable cities are likely to be discussed in the scenario of urban management, urban ecosystem, and a substitute to a conventional farming to urban areas. Urban sustainability is the idea that a city can be organized without excessive dependence on the surrounding countryside and be able to power itself with renewable sources of energy. Today, I will be discussing in short about green roofs for sustainable cities.

Green roofs for sustainable cities

A study conducted by [1] suggests that rooftop farming which is also known as green roofs have a huge impact on the urban ecosystem as they have a significant and potential role in providing ecosystem services. Though they are likely to be artificial ecosystems, species diversity ensures them for being interactive with the natural existing ecosystem.

What are the benefits of green roofs?

In the previously mentioned report, I have presented a soft benefit calculation which was the monetary benefits. But, more than monetary benefits their role in the sustainable ecosystem, sustainable cities, and healthy living is one which is to be highlighted.

Research on Dhulikhel, Nepal suggests that all of the green roof owners were satisfied and are continuing it. They also revealed that savings on weekly food requirement and availability of high-quality products in own roofs excite them to manage the gardens for sustainable use.

Thus, the promotion of green roofs and maintenance of the urban ecosystem is a present need and we should focus on it.
