Environmental Security

When you think of security what do you think of first? Is it soldiers with guns? Armored vehicles running around protecting the nation? Well the answer is yes...but also no. As humanity moves on to the 21st century and beyond, the term "security" has become more generalized such that it encompasses more of a wider breath. Now, the phrase has diversified and separated into new subcategories under the umbrella term, with examples being economic security, health security, and environmental security. Climate change has exacerbated the need to address these different types of securities with the most pressing being the final one: environmental security.

Environmental Security is the idea that the impact of climate change will spark internal conflict and/or external ones. Essentially, its the idea that environmental degradation will magnify the already existing issues in the country and will result in eventual conflict.  For example, in Southern Iraq conflicts developed because of water contamination affecting over 110,000 people. In this case water was weaponized to sway the conflict. Again, another example is the Lake Chad region in Africa where the conflict there is largely predicated on the environmental degradation of the setting near the lake.

Today, actions are being taken to reduce the potential conflicts. The UN has increasingly began to accept the relationship between security and the environment. Further, the UN is now implementing more environmental policies following a conflict to avoid future environmental issues spiraling into conflicts.

It's important to understand and be aware of the two very broad concepts:the environment and security. However, whats more pressing is to understand the interconnectivity between the two and how the world needs to pay more attention to stopping the flow between environmental degradation and the violent conflict that negatively impacts the population.
