There is currently a very limited window of time for humans to reverse the damage they've done to the planet. Once this window has closed, it may be too late to recreate the ecological balance. You can do your part to help the planet heal and it can make you healthier too. Stop Eating MeatMeat production is one of the most polluting processes on the planet. Fields that should be devoted to growing healthy food for humans are growing corn and soybeans to feed cattle. Ironically, cows are not meant to eat these things and they spend most of their short lives feeling ill. In addition, there are so many factory farms mass-producing beef, the animals are disturbing the very atmosphere by the release of methane, one of the biggest culprits in global warming. You can help reverse this trend by cutting back on, or eliminating, your meat consumption. If you are already a vegetarian or vegan, become a healthier one by incorporating green superfood powder into your diet. This will ensure you are getting all of the nutrients you need to stay healthy without chopping vegetables all day. Stop Using PlasticPlastic may once have seemed like the perfect modern invention, but it has become one of the biggest problems on the planet. Since plastic does not biodegrade, we are stuck with every inch of plastic that has ever been produced. Fortunately, efforts are being made to gather and recycle as much plastic from the oceans as possible. Interestingly, a bacteria has been discovered that is capable of ingesting plastic waste and turning it into carbon. Still, both of these processes are likely to proceed slowly. While scientists are working on a solution to plastic pollution, it is each individual's duty to eliminate plastic from their lives. Glass has always been a superior substance to plastic. It can easily be melted down and repurposed. Even when it is carelessly discarded into the ocean, it eventually washes back to shore as sea glass. While in the ocean, it does not harm sea life or give off any harmful chemicals. In addition, glass is safe to use in a microwave or to hold food and water since it doesn't transfer anything toxic as plastic containers do. Perhaps flimsy plastic bags are the most harmful items produced. They cannot be recycled and many end up polluting both the land and sea. In the ocean, they are particularly dangerous because they can look edible to many sea creatures as they float by. Once ingested, they usually cause a painful death. You can stop this from happening by totally eliminating the use of plastic bags in your life. There are many alternatives to plastic bags, both for shopping and packing a lunch. Even single-use sandwich bags can be replaced by super "green" beeswax wraps. Stop Buying New ClothesMany people go through the wasteful cycle of buying new clothes every year, only to discard them the next year to buy newer ones. People following this pattern could be excused if they donate their unwanted clothes. However, most used clothing ends up in landfills. In fact, a typical landfill is composed of around 60% clothing. A better place to shop is a used clothing store. Many of the items that can be found there are new or barely worn and they are all cleaned before going out on the sales floor. Shopping there will save these clothing items from the dump, but that's not all. They will allow you to constantly add to your wardrobe for very little money. Most used clothing stores also support charities and send a portion of their profits to benefit others. Plus, this is a great idea for a meaningful startup business. There are even online shopping guides to help you find the thrift store looks. You may feel that as an individual, you can't accomplish much. However, if many individuals adopt a greener lifestyle, there may still be a chance to heal the planet. |
