You work hard to promote your small business by creating an image that conveys high-quality products or services, the best, most professional customer service in the business, and anything else that makes you unique. One way to boost your sales is by transitioning to a more environmentally friendly business model. Why Should I Strive to Be More Environmentally Conscious? It can be tricky to develop a marketing strategy small business, but running your business in an environmentally friendly way can positively impact the way prospective customers view your business. There has been a major spike in demand for eco-friendly businesses as our society becomes more aware of the cost that damaging business practices can have on the environment. Aside from keeping the planet healthier, switching to a more eco-conscious business model can also serve as a marketing point for your customers. According to Forbes, consumers will continue to increase their demand for sustainable practices from businesses. Younger generations especially do their research into businesses and companies they want to purchase from to ensure the company's practices align with their ethical values. Companies that pay fair wages and use environmentally-conscious processes will have a leg up over the competition with consumers that hold these values high. Finally, striving to be more eco-friendly may actually save your business money in the long run. Some states may provide tax incentives for green initiatives, and a reduction in packaging or using more fuel efficient vehicles could reduce your business's overall costs. How Can I Run a More Eco-Friendly Business? Making a shift toward a more green business isn't always easy, but there are several small steps you can take to get started. 1. Invest in Energy Efficient Appliances and Fixtures It may seem like a huge investment to purchase energy efficient appliances and fixtures, but you can start small. Switching out stard light bulbs to high-efficiency ones, for example, can be an excellent place to start. High-efficiency bulbs not only last up to 50 times longer, but they can also significantly reduce your energy bill. Energy Star appliances, like coffeemakers, freezers, and dishwashers can also reduce the amount of water and energy your business uses, saving on both utility bills as well. You don't have to overhaul all of your appliances overnight, but when the time comes to invest in new equipment, make an effort to purchase appliances that use energy as efficiently as possible. 2. Up Your Recycling Game If your business doesn't already recycle, this can be a simple and cost-effective place to start on your sustainability journey. Check with your city's recycling guidelines, as each vicinity can vary greatly in their requirements. Train your staff to clean out recyclable containers and dispose of them properly to reduce the amount of recyclable material that goes to the landfill. If you already recycle but want to further your eco-friendly practices, purchase packaging, single-use tableware, and napkins that are made of recycled materials. They may cost a bit more that standard disposable materials, but environmentally-conscious clientele will appreciate the effort. 3. Switch to Partial or Full Solar Energy If you catch the sustainability bug and really want to go big, you should look into installing solar panels. Not only do some states provide significant tax credits for the installation, you can also save thousands on energy costs over the years. Plus, relying partially or fully on solar energy can be a major selling point for clients looking to partner with businesses that truly practice environmentally friendly procedures. Even if your business isn't located in a vicinity that historically has sunny days year-round, solar panels can still increase the amount of clean energy your business uses on a daily basis. The Bottom Line You may be interested in adopting a more sustainable business model for the simple reason that you can market your practices to potential clients. Once you get started on the eco-friendly path, however, you'll realize that small steps can make a huge difference for the earth, and your bottom line, in the long run. |
