Things turned bad when many of trees from across the Garhwal Himalayas were being recklessly cut down. This resulted in the rapid decline of forests, which further caused landslides and floods. On 26 March 1974, when some loggers come to cut us down, a group of women hugged us and forced them to leave. This movement came to be known as the Chipko Movement . It was successful in stopping defortation in the area. It also highlighet the power of non-violent protest by people. Its success has inspired many enviromental  groups in India and the world to increase awareness about the need to save trees.
