How to Have a Great Outdoor Adventure

There's nothing better than getting out in nature for a bit of adventure and relaxation. However, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on your trip, even if you're careful.


Plan Your Trip Before You Go:

Make sure you're not going to be doing anything illegal, and check whether any areas will be closed off due to hunting season or other natural events.


Pack a Backpack:

Keep the weight of your gear to a minimum. If you're doing a lot of hiking, good boots are definitely worth it. Skip the chafing and soreness.


Packing Your Backpack:

Label all items that you plan on carrying with their contents (ex. Drinks, sleeping gear, etc.) to prevent them from getting mixed up with other items like red powder while you're out in the forest.


Learn How to Tell Time:

Watch the clock constantly so that you don't get lost. Learn some basic survival skills for when you get lost (map reading, compass reading, finding your way using landmarks and identifying plants).


Wear Lightweight Clothes:

Thicker jackets and heavy boots will weigh you down, which can make a huge difference in the difficulty of your trip. Bring along a windbreaker or lightweight canvas shoes to wear during the day.


Bring Along Extra Stuff:

If you're going camping, bring extra matches/lighters, toilet paper and hand sanitizer in case of any emergencies. Extra food is also a good idea if you're doing an overnight trek.


Tell Someone Where You'll Be:

Always let someone know where you'll be going and what time you think it'll take to get there, so that if anything happens they know where to start looking for you. Call in advance and explain what you'll be doing so that people will understand if you get held up by weather or something else.


Be Prepared for the Weather:

Learn how to find shelter and dry off, and carry some extra supplies for unexpected weather (with a rain jacket, warm hat, etc.). Carry a survival kit with basic tools in case of emergencies - such as a knife and extra rope.


Stay Hydrated:

Hold onto water bottles whenever possible. Bring along anything else you think you'll need (sunscreen, bug spray, lip balm, etc.).

Besides simple dehydration, drinking too much water can lead to sickness and nausea.


Know the Area:

Before starting, make sure you have a sense of where you're going. Know the names of the trees and plants, and know your way around the area so as to avoid getting lost. Carry a Map: Even if you're familiar with the area, carry maps in case you get lost. Keep these maps in plastic so that they don't get ruined.


Stay on Trail:

If you're camping out anywhere, stay on the marked trails. Straying from a trail can cause injury or death if no one is around to help rescue you.


Watch for Boulders:

If you're climbing or hiking through rocky areas, watch out for half-buried boulders - they can be lethal if not avoided. Hike around them to avoid any accidents.


Watch Your Step:

Look out for any suspicious holes in the ground - they could be animal burrows or sinkholes. Don't try to climb down into one of them. If you fall, try climbing back up the way you came down. If that's not possible, follow your hand over hand backwards (called "retro-climbing") to get back up where you came from.
