8 Outdoor Sports To Get You Moving This Fall

For people in many places, fall means a break from the overbearing heat of summer and welcomes shorter, cooler days. Those cooler temperatures may have you feeling more energetic and, as a result, looking for a new sport to take up. This list of eight awesome fall sports will have you up and moving no matter what level of athletic abilities you have.

1. Hiking

Hiking can be suitable for just about any physical ability — some trails are even ADA accessible — which makes it a great sport for those who aren't athletically inclined. To start off easy, try navigating a few paved or well-maintained paths at your local park. Then, when you are ready for a more challenging route, look into more natural terrain in the larger state or national parks. Joining a hiking group can be a great way to find appropriate trails and meet others who are interested in getting outdoors.

2. Pickleball

If you want a sport with a little more pep, consider trying your hand at pickleball. Courts are popping up all over, so you are sure to find one nearby. Many community centers and gyms offer lessons or clubs to teach you the ins and outs of the game. Once you get the hang of it, check out some great ONIX pickleball paddles for increased comfort while playing.

3. Biking

Fall is a great time of year to break out the bikes from storage and hit the road. You can take in the beautiful color-changing scenery while getting in a good workout. Be sure to wear a helmet and adhere to any other regulations in your area when riding. It's also a good idea to carry some emergency supplies like water and a first aid kit.

4. Football

If there is one sport that says fall more than others, Football is it. Nestled between Friday nights devoted to high school and Monday evening's big game, you can find countless opportunities to catch some of the action. Look into recreational leagues and teams nearby to see if there is one that fits your goals. Keep in mind that some teams are more competitive while others are just out for a few good laughs and a cold beer after the game.

5. Cross-Country Skiing

You might not think of snow sports in the fall, but many areas of the country start seeing measurable snow in October. So, if you happen to be in an area where fall is cloaked in more white than colorful leaves, snowshoeing could be a great sport to try out. It requires a minimum investment in equipment, and, like hiking, it is only as strenuous as you make it.

6. Swimming

An indoor pool can be an excellent refuge when the weather outside starts getting cooler. Swimming is great because it is a supportive sport for people with joint limitations. Many towns or cities have recreational and competitive leagues that you can join. Then when the weather gets warmer, you can take it back outdoors.

7. Golf

Golf is an excellent sport for those who enjoy getting outside and challenging their abilities. With the assistance of a cart, you won't have to walk too far, although in many places you could also opt for the cardio workout of carrying your clubs around the course. If you've never played, it's probably a good idea to take a few lessons and spend some time on the practice range before hitting a full course.

8. Rock Climbing

Believe it or not, fall is a great time to take up rock climbing. Head to an indoor gym to get the hang of the techniques needed. Then, head outdoors to put your skills to the test. Some people prefer to climb strictly indoors or out, too, so you might find yourself in one of those groups. There is no right or wrong, so do what works for you.

No matter where your athletic skills fall, you can find a sport to enjoy this fall. Rock climbing, hiking, pickleball, and football are just a few of the options you might want to try.
