D. latifolia (Roswood) is a commercially important tree species as it produces highly valuable timber. Timber of rosewood was used to make many agricultural tools like traditional plough (halo), juwa etc. in the past in Kapilvastu district. It was also used for making bed and charpoy and to meet the timber demand of local people, rosewood trees were cut. Due to heavy exploitation in many places, export of this species in the form of logs and sawn timber is also banned in Nepal. Two Community Forests (CFs) namely Shivmandir and Indreni Community Forest (only CFs with rosewood in Kapilvastu) have been exploited for its timber for many decades, but recent population pressure has greatly increased the rate of exploitation, leading to serious degradation of the species. Due to forest fire and illegal cutting, rosewood stands and other species in this area are rapidly disappearing, and consequently biodiversity of the area is shrinking at an alarming rate. Nevertheless, felling of this tree species by the locals for domestic purpose has been stopped as they became aware about its market value and are contributing in its conservation. Division forest office, Kapilvastu had also conducted plantation program in 2017 and 2021 A.D. This shows that different interventions and management practices from both local and government level can prevent the species from extinction in the future. Regular effective monitoring should also be carried out in the plantation area to check the growth and condition of rosewood. Similarly, if there are tree or seedlings dieback, their causes and extent should also be studied and effective measures should be taken to prevent dieback.
