5 Things To Consider Before Adding a Pool

Adding a swimming pool to your yard might seem like a wonderful idea, especially as the summer heats up and you're looking for ways to stay cool and have fun at the same time. But building a pool involves some serious considerations, and you should take time to think carefully before you make a decision and proceed with the project. Read on for some things to consider.

Your Budget

First, before you decide to install a pool, you must consider your budget. Pools come in a variety of sizes and styles, some of which are more expensive than others, but they all require a financial commitment. Spend some time looking over your income, expenses and current level of debt to determine how much you can afford to spend. If you have your heart set on one of the luxury inground pools Jackson MS, for instance, you may have to dip into your savings or even take out a home improvement loan. If that isn't possible or practical, then consider an above-ground pool instead.

Your Space

Next, take a look at how much space you have available. Your backyard may be quite small and would, therefore, require a rather small, probably above-ground pool, perhaps even an inflatable option that can be taken down and stored in the off-season. Carefully survey your space, and take some measurements so that you know exactly what you have to work with as you design your new pool.

Your Time

Pools require a lot of time and effort for maintenance. As you consider adding one, remember this. Think about who will be responsible for the chores of cleaning, maintaining and monitoring your pool. Do some research online about pool maintenance so that you know exactly what is required. You should also talk to family members to see how willing (or not) they are to help keep up your new pool. Suggest setting a pool maintenance schedule to split up the work. If people hesitate or grumble, then maybe a pool isn't the best idea for your household.

Your Family

In fact, you should carefully consider your family's situation before you make your decision. If you have young children, a pool may not be the best idea, or at the very least, you will have to make safety a priority. This could add to the budget. Also, think about the swimming abilities of you and your family members. Suggest a few lessons to prepare for your new pool if necessary. Reflect, too, on your family's schedule. If people are running in all directions for work, school and activities, fitting in time for pool fun and maintenance may not be realistic.

Your Neighborhood

Finally, think about your neighborhood. For one thing, if you live in a housing community, there may be restrictions with regard to building a pool. It may be prohibited, or there might be limits on size and style. Be sure you know these regulations before you proceed. Moreover, there may actually be a convenient pool right in your neighborhood. Perhaps there is a community center close by with an indoor or outdoor pool, or maybe a municipal pool isn't far away. Check out schedules, and see if you and your family can fit in frequent pool sessions. Depending on your family's situation, this may be preferable to having your own pool, or it may be too much of an inconvenience and make you want your own pool all the more.

Deciding to build a pool is a big deal. You must consider your budget, space, time, family and neighborhood before you start any pool project. But if you determine to go ahead, you can look forward to plenty of fun.
