Insect collection how justified? |

I am an applied science student and basically I am in love with the nature and its every element. Being a science student, you get to see the nature at its best, understand the process and then the wholeness of a system. It is simply amazing to feel science and its wonders. But while experimenting, there is a thing that bothers me a lot as I love everything of the nature. While studying entomology, we need to kill and preserve insects. It is a good way to learn but it is negatively hampering the environment and biodiversity. I had once read that the number of butterflies is decreasing very rapidly in the world with many species near to extinction. But during study we kill a lot of butterflies and then take them for study. Most of the times, we don?t even care about the ecology and the environment and their rights to live. The only solutions I see in this context is that collection should be done but not haphazardly. You can collect one number from one species there is no need to kill many from the same species and the students should be made aware of the fact that even one single organism?s extinction or number reduction can cause imbalance in the nature. |

Well noted. There are many computer simulations and softwares that can help study wildlife. We do not need to kill animals and insects to study them.
