2014 EARTH DAY

by Arushi Madan | 24-04-2014 03:50 recommendations 0

This year Earth Day turned out a very fruitful day for me . Early in the morning when I got up , I was glad to see my "Message on Earth Day" published in UAE's leading newspaper "GULF NEWS" alongwith the picture of recycled table I had made from discarded tyres. You can  read that message online on "Gulf News" through below link :

Then in school we had Earth day activities. As soon as I was back from school . I started getting ready to be a part of Bee'ah Annual Earth Day Walkathon (Bee'ah is Sharjah's environment and waste management company). Bee'ah had collected from my place the recycled tables I had made from discarded tyres and rims as they wanted to show case /display these in the walkathon area to convey message regarding recycling . The aim of this year's walkathon was to draw attention towards importance of recycling and need for beautification of Sharjah.

I had invited many of my friends to participate in this walkathon , had also promoted Bee'ah walkathon on social media.  Was glad to see all of them in walkathon. Before the start of walkathon , I opened Tunza Eco Generation banner and as expected , it attracted many people who were curious to know what is Tunza Eco Generation and it's objectives. I started telling them about Tunza Eco Generation. Soon I saw many more people joining me and listening to me . Many of them asked me how to be members of Tunza Eco Generation . Few of them had heard of Tunza Eco Generation but were more familiar now. I made new friends during this interaction. I told them about Earth Day , this year's Earth Day walkathon's aim of encouraging people to go for recycling, requesting them to be a part of all such environmental events and try to have positive environment habits and attitudes to protect environment and save Earth.  I asked them if they knew and if they could give me some examples of protecting environment . I was amazed to hear from some very young kids about planting trees which they rightly felt as the best way of protecting environment . Then as walkathon started we all walked together as one Big Tunza Eco gen group. Infact , Bee'ah staff was calling us loudly as "Good going Tunza group , keep walking". We kept chanting slogans like "Let's Save Mother Earth " , "East or West Bee'ah is the best" , "Waste not , Want not " , "Think Green , Love Green, Live Green " . We were having fun walking in this walkathon for a common cause of Mother Earth on this special EARTH DAY. Soon we saw FINISH line and were thrilled that we reached the end of walkathon. This was the end of walkathon. We all one by one took pledge in our own words to save earth. Our pledge was shot/recorded by Bee'ah official cameraman and would be part of Bee'ah corporate video.

Then started the award ceremony on the ground with a big stage. This ceremony was to recognize , acknowledge, honour and award the Bee'ah Champions who have been working whole heartedly supporting Bee'ah's environmental mission by contributing with recyclables like used Aluminium cans of coke  , papers , plastic bottles etc. I was very very happy to get the 3rd prize and announced as Bee'ah's 3rd BEST CHAMPION. One of the Chief guests presented me nice crystal trophy with my name embossed on it alongwith some cash vouchers. This really made my day.

After the end of award ceremony , I was guided by Bee'ah officer towards the area where my tables were showcased. I went there , put our Tunza Eco Gen banner and started answering to visitors' questions who were curious to know how are these tables made. They were very surprised that scrap tyres became so beautiful , useful tables. Some visitors asked if they could click picture of them with my tables . I was more than happy to have them take pictures as that was the purpose—to inspire people to go for recycling. Then I was interviewed by Gulf Today newspaper and a TV Channel asking about my source of inspiration for making these tables , my opinion on walkathon , on current environment issues and message for others.

We then returned to our homes. Even at home I wanted to make it special to mark EARTH DAY. I advised my parents to let's have candle light dinner to save electricity at least during dinner time. We had good quality time during candle light dinner.

All in All it was a day full of fun , good /environmental cause ,  new friends making , setting examples for others and receiving the award-all in one day , on this very special , very green  EARTH DAY.

Christy : You mixed up Swathy with Aasha. I met Aasha in Earth Day walkathon and I met Swathy in Science Symposium which was anchored and compered by me.
