On 1st of April 2015, Tanzania celebrated its National Planting Trees Day which is an event celebrated yearly by emphasizing its citizens towards planting of different trees. In Dar Es Salaam region, Kinondoni district hosted the event at Mjimpya Primary School located at Magwepande area.

The event was attended and supported by Dar Es Salaam region Commissioner Hon. Said Sadiki, Kinondoni District Commissioner Hon Paul Makonda, Mayor of Kinondoni Municipal Hon Yusuf Mwenda, Primary students and teachers of Mjimpya Primary School and other environment stakeholders.

The main objective of the event is to emphasize Tanzanian Citizen on the benefits of planting trees, educating on the proper ways of planting trees and to fight against deforestation, which is the cutting down of trees without replacement of new ones. Over population, Rural – Urban Migration, High demand of timber as raw material for furniture products, developments of town like Dar Es Salaam are among the reasons for deforestation. Thus, National Planting Trees Day to adopt afforestation scheme.

Charles Lugenga who is environment officer from EBPA educated the attendants on the ways of planting trees by using used Car Tyre, applying manure and frequently watering the trees until its last stage of growth. Guest of Honors also used that particular event by planting different trees to commemorate the event.

Trees are life. Why trees are life, it is because they cools our streets, save water, combat the climate change, reduce water pollution, provide canopy and habitat for wildlife, provide wood and so forth.

With the above benefits of trees Kudos to my country that marked this particular date on the calendar to be honored yearly. Moreover, People should not cut down tree for the satisfaction of their own demand.

That is so nice of Tanzanians. I just want to add that it shouldn't end with just planting of the trees but there should be a constituted authority to water and care for them till they are strong enough to survive on their own. I have observed that most of these trees die after a short time from neglect.

Thank you for sharing the story vividly. Some of timber merchant companies started making their business model sustainable by doing both of cutting and planting simultaneously. Tree planting is one of the best gift we can give to the mother nature. :)

Trees are the lifelines /lungs of Earth and are very crucial biotic component of our ecosystem so by all means we should plant more and more trees and avoid cutting of existing trees. Really happy for Tanzania to recognise 1st April every year as National Tree planting day. Thanks for your report , Kalimbo.
