Mass fish death in Vietnam raises an alarming problem of ocean pollution

by | 07-05-2016 23:11 recommendations 0

In the last days of April, many Vietnamese fishermen in Quang Binh Province were tremendously shocked when discovering thousands of dead fish drifted to the beach. The amount of dead fish was over two tons. This mass death of fish caused colossal damage to the income of the local fishermen. They also shared that they did not dare to eat dead fish because they feared the toxic substance in dead fish would go into their bodies and harm their health.

Immediately, the government asked for the investigation of fish death. The cause was discovered by some fishermen who dived for quite a long time to detect the source of toxic substance. Surprisingly, they found the toxic waste was pumped directly to the water through the pipe from a company named Formosa which produced iron like nearby. The story is raising a wave of rage from Vietnamese.

Right now, Vietnam is taking all the possible measures to reject the toxic from the water and support food for the citizen whose life is dependent on selling fish. The United Nations also expressed the willing to help Vietnam and gave condolence to the local.

This is a very painful lesson to Vietnam. Vietnam should take more notice of protecting its marine environment and take strong measure on punishing terrible behaviors that cause marine pollution.

Dear Thao, thanks for the second report! I lately came across a very similar story from South America, where they had millions of dead fish on the beach, followed by dead dolphins and etc. The beach was covered with carcasses... Thanks for introducing what's happening in Vietnam.

Thao, sad to hear fish dying in Vietnam because of those toxic substances. I wonder what those substances were exactly, and why those fishers dare to collect those substances is it economically lucrative or did they need it for their scientific research? Anyways, I sincerely hope the Vietnam government could put expedite efforts to solve this problem as soon as possible. Thanks for informing us and hope to meet you with other great reports!

I agree with Arushi. The mass death of fish does cause a damage in fishermen's income. Factories should not be allowed to dump their toxic wastes without thinking it through. Hopefully they would learn from their actions and this won't happen again. Thank you so much for your report. Keep it up!

It is really sad to know that so many fish are dying due to toxic pollutants released from 'Formosa' factory. You rightly said Vietnam authorities have to be very vigilant and strict in protecting marine environment. Thanks for sharing.
