Permaculture Caravan: UparDang Gadhi Diaries

by Sujan Adhikari | 26-09-2016 00:56 recommendations 0

About Caravan:

Nepal Permaculture Group(NPG) organized Permaculture Caravan to UparDang Gadhi with a team of Organic Leaders, Agricultural lecturers and students, Media Personnel and Local leaders. And I was among the 6 students who was in the team.

Caravan was full of fun and knowledge and probably it?s the best way to celebrate 20th anniversary of NPG.

About Permaculture:

Permaculture is an innovative framework for creating sustainable ways of living: a practical method of developing ecologically harmonious, efficient and productive systems that can be used by anyone, anywhere. An evolving Permaculture gives witness to present concern, & builds a beneficial future legacy.

5 hrs. Hiking to Upardang Gadhi:

Shirt soaked with sweats, eyes full of enthusiasm, mind full of fun, legs are tired though we need to travel high to reach destination and yes I was in love with this circumstances.

Hiking is itself fun and place you reach after hard efforts make it memorable. Though its difficult to trek high, everyone loves this for fun (not for necessity). And yeah it?s my second travel to this place, I was acknowledged with the short-cut route. So, I was guiding friends and moving on.

Through different points we reached Upardang Gadhi in about 5 hrs (actually it take only 3 hrs if u go straight).

Cleanliness in Historical Upardang Gadhi Fort:

Though we reached late, our earlier friends joined cleaning program around Fort. Especially we removed weeds from the fort wall, and also cleaned around the fort.  Its good one as it helps to protect and give long life to the stones, wall and other materials of fort.

Discussion Forum on Eco-tourism and Agro-tourism development:

At night our team discussed on promotion of eco and agro-tourism in hilly villages of Nepal and its difficulties. It was a fruitful one and different idea was brainstormed for the promotion of tourism.

Also NPG explained their idea about promoting permaculture in these areas. Many areas here are still organic, as people are not using chemicals since they habituated there.

Main conclusion was to make good trekking route to connect hilly villages, provide essential facilities to domestic and international tourists. Also cooperation with hotels in Sauraha, Chitwan National Park can be asset for tourism promotion.

About Hilly Villages of Chitwan:

Hattibang :

3 hrs of walk from Hungdi Bajar (situated on main highway of Muglin-Kathmandu) can take people to mind blowing Chepang Village of Chitwan, Hattibang. Chepang people were dominant population in past but now we can see population mix. It lies in Ward no. 3 of Kaule VDC .

Different spots are locked here make plan to visit this beautiful place to unlock the hidden treasure of Hattibang. Homestay are available at cheaper cost.

SiraiChuli

1 hr and 30 minutes walk from Hattibang leads to highest hill of Chitwan, Siraichuli stands high at 1946 masl. Himalayan range on north, red forest of Rhododendrons (During February) and green landscapes of terai in south can be seen clearly. Rising and setting sun is heart throbbing one.

Lower Kaule

Hungdi Bajar , when gone to another way through Jaypurikot leads to Lower Kaule on 3 hrs walk. It lies in Kaule 6 of Chitwan. Indigenous tribes like Magar, Chepang along with chetri people inhabit here. This village is leading in agriculture with production of oranges, tea and cardamom. About 2 hrs walk from here we can reach to Siraichuli.

Chisapani Tar :

In-between Siraichuli and Upardang Gadhi there lies Chisapanitar. Since it is evergreen forests, ornithologists take this place as heaven. Different rare birds can be viewed here. Sun rises early and there is enough food for birds in this forest.

Upardang Gadhi :

It is one of the most important places from historical viewpoint. Grandson of Prithivi Narayan Shah established Upardang Gadhi fort namely Shatruvanjan Shah 250 years back.  It was headquarter of Chitwan till 2016 B.S (1961 A.D) and lies at 1205 masl. It can be promoted for tourism. It is 2 hrs away from Chisapanitar. In its south forest of Chiyuri, in north Rigdi river, in west Salthana lies. Gurung, Chepnag, Magar inhibit here.

Serbas

On way from Upardang Gadhi to Saktikhor, there lies Serbas. It lies in Saktikhor Ward no. 1 and mostly habituated by Chepang tribe. For understanding Chepang people, observing birds, to live in close with Chepang this village is of significant importance.

Saktikhor

Community forests under Nepal Government around Buffer Zone of Chitwan National Park mostly occupy Saktikhor. Here 15 community forests and 53 registered forests group can be found. Commercial goat, honey, vegetables production are increasing along with bird observation.

Main Things to do in hilly area of Chitwan:

Observing Scenery: All most all months

Leech Observation: June to September

Mandarin Farming: September to January

Rhododendron Observation: February to May

Birds' observation: All months

Mulberry/Raspberry : April and May
