What can be done to avoid earthquake mass destruction?

by | 26-09-2016 01:24 recommendations 0

Tanzania for the first time earthquake with magnitude 5.7(Tanzania Geologists, 2016) hit northern of the country and live mass number of people with no homes and few dead (19 people). According to Tanzanian government more than 1000 houses were broken and 840 houses were demolished.
Before 5.7 earthquake magnitude ,most of the earthquakes magnitude used to range at five where by they used to bring no harm to the community as well as no destruction or any deaths to human beings and animals.
Most of developing countries are not prepared for natural disasters or catastrophes as compared to developed countries .Developed countries they have signals before the occurrence of natural disaster like earthquake ,hence they have preventive measures to its citizens before mass destruction.
What happened in Tanzania there was no signals to its citizens about earthquake, houses were built with little space between one another which leads to multiple effect when earthquake occurs, citizens and government were also reluctant that earthquake always occurs with low magnitude which brings no harm to the community and lastly there was no enough education about earthquake to the community
I think the following should be put into consideration in order to solve mass destruction caused by earthquake to the community and environment.
Provision of education on natural disasters and earthquake in general.
Earlier signals should be provided by the government to its citizens.
Country investment in scientists
Building of seismic and earthquake resistant homes to areas vulnerable to earthquakes
Enough space is important between one house and another

As Tunza Eco generation ambassador I will try to raise awareness on this to my local community and on social medias.

It is my first time being informed that there was an earthquake in Tanzania. I hope you and your neighbors are safe. Thanks for sharing the news despite the disaster, and I hope all gets well, as soon as possible.

It's really sad to know that earthquake had broken houses and killed people in Tanzania. But I think like you say in your report, all governments in the world should put in place a systme to inform , educate people about earthquake and other natural catastrophes because nowadays it's becoming usually thing.
Hope all Tanzanian will be protected and receive support from other in the region. All my liking to the Tanzanian..
    Thanks for sharing

I didn't know about this! My blessings to those who are going through extreme pain whether that be physical or emotional There also was an earthquake with magnitude 5.8 in south Korea several weeks ago, I believe. Luckily nobody was hurt but it was a shock to everyone as Korean peninsula was commonly believed to be safe from earthquakes. Well, it seems what is left for us and the people of Tanzania is to not idly ignore the possibility of these disasters happening again and tightly prepare for what may come. Thanks for uploading.

So sorry for Tanzania. An earth quake happened in Uganda mid this month that shook buildings.people ran out of malls. But so glad it did put down structures and people were entirely safe. people started making fan of the earthquake. This really caught my attention. Instead of aiming at reducing such catastrophies,it became a comic incident. Alot of awareness is needed.

So sorry for Tanzania.preventing earthquake is a good idea but no matter what we put in place it would happen. those are natural disaters. and im still sceptical about the prevention of such disasters just like the lake Nyos in Cameroon. But before leavx for the other world my grand mother told me that if something bad would happen mostly aerthquakes ,always look at animals they would give you signals. Dont know ow to explain that.
    a candle for Tanzania

I did not know that there are some people who still think that earthquakes are caused by angry gods. Education is definitely needed.

Sad to hear about Earthquake in Tanzania, But I think 5.7 Rechter Scale is not so big and most of the buildings are resistant to this level of Earthquake.

Yeah You are right , Nepal when hard hit by 6.8 Magnitude, it was devastating one. We are not either prepared for the Earthquake to come but now many are aware about it.

People started building Earthquake resistant builidng, government strictly followed some rules and regulations to make safer cities. Also people learned about idea on how to save themselves in hard moment.

Thanks for the report Peter , Hope everything wil be fine soon :)

Thank you for your critical reasoning i literally agree with you,but we can still try to provide education to some locals who does not understand what causes earthquake, to prepare themselves especially in the predicted vulnerable areas,by building houses that can sustain seismic waves.Sadly there some people think that earthquake is caused by gods when they are angry with our sins.Thank you once again Yvonne Wabai !!!

Tanzania had an earthquake? That is devastating news. I hope you're all safe. What you say is true, most developing countries are not prepared to face earthquakes. To be fair though, earthquakes are caused by the movement of tectonic plates and their magnitude depends on the extent of movement of the plates and whether or not the plates collide with other plates. There are also other factors such as volcanic activities in the region. Here in Kenya, we've only experienced earth tremors (as long as I've been living here, which is 20 years), so it may be hard to concentrate all our energies on preparing for earthquakes when we have much more pressing issues such as landslides and famine. This is not to say that your point of view is not valid. It is actually very valid. What I'm saying is that it is hard for developing countries when it comes to such issues because our funds and energies are already stretched thin. A potent solution would be to build structures that can withstand natural catastrophes from now henceforth. In Kenya, for instance, part of the problem is the education system. Currently, it mostly produces Jacks and Jills of all trades but masters of none. Innovation is not encouraged and the technology used is redundant. Granted, it takes money to invest in education, but a lot needs to be done. An education reform is currently in progress. With quality education and innovative minds, it is very possible to create affordable solutions to problems such as these. In conclusion, the solution is long-winded but we will get there. The goal is to keep moving. All the best in rebuilding. <3 Sending love from Kenya, your northern neighbour.
