The Legacy of Rachel Carson

As we're living in an age of global environmental issues, the troublesome circumstances have surely given rise to many amazing environmentalists that have shaped the way we think about ecological problems.

One of the greatest, and especially admirable environmentalists of the 20th century is Rachel Carson. A while back, there have been many reviews of her famous book when we had the opportunity to write about inspiring environmentalist books.

Even though „Silent Spring" is considered by many to be one of the most inspiring and important books that deal with environmental issues, her environmentalism definitely didn't start or end there.

„Crowned" by many as one of the best nature writers in the 20th century, Rachel Carson almost surely launched the environmentalist movement and even influenced the USA government to support her studies and start banning and prosecuting potentially harmful pesticide usage.

As she was a marine biologist that primarily worked as a writer and editor to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Washington, DC, she published many books that specifically deal with environmental issues concerning marine ecosystems.

One of her most famous books „The Sea Around Us" was an international best-seller that raised awareness on sea pollution and made her a trusted public and scientific environmentalist voice.

Through her books on the sea ( Under the Sea-Wind, 1941 and The Edge of the Sea 1955), she raised interest on the topics of underwater research and how climate change is directly responsible for many of the greatest global ecological issues.

She died of cancer in 1964, but left an enormous legacy that inspired and will surely inspire generations of future environmentalists that will hopefully steer our planet in the right direction. Tunza Eco friends, let us be part of that legacy.

Rachel Carson is truly an admirable environmentalist and infact beyond that. Her legacy has three parts: her written work, her environmental ethic, and her iconic persona as a role model. Through her gifted writing she shifted public opinion to understand the interconnectedness of all living systems. Thanks for highlighting her persona.
