FIGHTING ILLEGAL HUNTING, SAVING ENDANGERED SPECIES.

Seeing the common chimpanzee may not only yield a more focused mind but also a happier one. Common chimpanzee (Pantroglodytes) is one of primate species found in NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK. This rainforest is located in the watershed between the basin of river Congo to the west and the basin of the river Nile to the east. From the east side of the Nyungwe forest comes also one of the tributaries of the source of River Nile.

Nyungwe rainforest is the largest remaining tract of forest and probably one of the best preserved rainforests in the mountains of Africa. Nyungwe forest has a wide diversity of animal species, making it a priority for conservation in Africa. The park has 13 different primate species (25% of Africa?s total), 27 bird species, 1068 plant species, 85 mammal species, 32 amphibian species and 38 reptile species . Many of these animals are restricted –range species that are only found in the Albertine Rift valley Montane.

In fact, the number of endemic species found here is greater than in any other forest in the Albertine Rift Valley of East Africa that has been surveyed. It is of particular interest for the presence of colonies of chimpanzees for intense hunting for which they were subjected. To protect endangered species in Rwanda, It took great efforts for the government to sensitize the population importance of thes rare animals. People leaving near Nyungwe forest have already changed their occupations from poaching to other important occupations. They have taken initiatives of promoting local brands and crafts by selling them to tourists. This has decreased number of deaths of precious chimpanzee affected by illegal hunting while citizens enjoying the benefits from Tourism. We can help to make the world a better place. Raising awareness of endangered species is just one of the ways. I hope at Eco Generation, we will continue to raise awareness for the good of the planet we call home.

Hi, Irazoke! The way that the Rwandan government protected chimpanzees by promoting the transition of seeing chimpanzees as a 'poaching animal' to a 'lovable animal', increasing public awareness and love for these animals. :) This is surely one of the best and most effective ways to get people to willingly stop killing these animals and start looking after and protecting them. Thank you for your report!

Nice effort of people to focus on protecting their precious species :) That will be a great way to increase general awareness and also to promote the importance of preventing species extinction. Nice work!!

Good to hear that people have changed their own occupation to protect this species. Until and unless people themself become responsible the protection of such species is not possible .
