TO BE OR NOT TO BE

by Anna Kovbasniuk | 30-12-2018 00:20 recommendations 0

Elk (Alces alces; Ukrainian: los¡¯). The largest even-hoofed mammal of the deer family. In Ukraine, the elk was common until the 16th century in the forest and forest-steppe belts. Then it was almost wiped out by humans because of its tasty meat and valuable hide. Today some elk survive in the forest belt, particularly in northwestern Ukrainian Polisia.

The elk was listed in a Red Book of Ukraine* in December 2017 as a vulnerable species requiring protection in order to preserve and reproduce the population.

*Red Book of Ukraine - official document containing information about the current condition of the animal species, species of plants and mushrooms of Ukraine that are in danger of passing away or need the protection.

One of the main reasons for introducing this species into the Red Book of Ukraine is reliable information on the reduction of the number of species, or the reduction of the area of their habitats, which may endanger the future existence of the species. In any case, this is a matter of scientific research, not ethics, economics or politics.

However, on November 27, 2018, the District Court of Kyiv abolished the decision to introduce the Elk to the Red Book, thus legitimizing the hunt for it.

The number of species in 1991 was about 16 thousand, according to official estimates, now range from 2 to 4,5 thousand.

Recently, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has appealed to the court to cancel the previous decision, and I do not hope that after the decision, elk will be returned to the Red Book.
Some scientists argue that the elk can completely disappear from the territory of Ukraine until 2050 if it is not included it in the Red Book back.

Hello Rosa, losing specific species means another and collateral damage to the environment though we cannot find it out easily in short time
Elks and their herds must have played a certain role in their territories such as restricting the disperse of monospecies in certain territories.
Though some species do look so useless as they do not seem to play crucial role in their ecosystem, none of them is not important in their region :)
Thanks for your report, I got to know about elks in Ukraine

With increasing human influence on environment, wildlife and their habitat, many animals are becoming vulnerable and are at the stage of extinction.

I do appreciate the decision taken to add the vulnerable animal by Ukraine. Strict actions must be taken to protect such animals before we loose their existence.

Thank you for the report Anna. Keep writing great reports.
wishing you happy and prosperous New Year.

    Hey there Anna!

    Seasons greetings to you!

I've seen drawings of the elk in numerous cartoons portraying them as reindeers and it is such a coincidence that you have them as your report update for the month.

The Elk is such a majestical species of the deer family and it is disturbing to know that it has decreased in its population from 16000 to a maximum of 2000 of these species. I hope that the appeal to the High Court of the nation of Ukraine will allow the Elk to return to the redbook because this will ensure that they are protected and conserved.

also I believe that an awareness campaign should be rolled out so as to make those who Hunt Elk aware of how important the specie is to the nation only then will see will we see a gradual rise in its population.

Thank you for this wonderful report update on letting us know about this beautiful creature!

    Yours sincerely
    R.
