Soil Lives Matter

by Bonface Obuba | 30-12-2018 17:29 recommendations 0

I'm a civil engineering student. In class, we study soil mechanics.
To engineers, soil is important in at least two ways. Soil is the foundation of most engineering structures. It is also a building material.

Now, most of us have viewed soil as a building material, or the stuff plants grow on or simply dirt. But soil is way more important beyond that. It is home to many living organisms which have an unbelievably important role to the environment.

The animals that burrow the soil aerate it enabling it to breathe carbon in and out which helps regulate greenhouse gases and combat climate change. Some organisms are known to clean certain types of pollution. Soil also stores and purifies water.

Some of the practices that damage soil include:
Poor agricultural services, improper soil management, uncontrolled dumping of waste bacteria, nematode, fungal mycelium, protozoans.

These practices have to stop.

Soil lives matters!

Soil has different importance in different field. It is home of soil living organism, land for the farmers where they can grow foods and place where they can build buildings.

Although, we have different uses of soil in different fields, the thing we need to focus is we all need to preserve the quality of soil as it is important for all of us.

Thank you for the report Bonface, Hope to read many reports from you related to engineering and environment.

Wishing you happy and prosperous New Year 2019.

    Hello Bonface
Nice to know more about soils and its value!
I remember reading a book called civilized engineer, a book written by a civil engineer and could see how engineering has stemmed from the warm heart to make human lives better.
Now it seems that we have to extend the view so that engineering could be help to improve the overall condition of this environment!
    Thanks for the report :)

Hello Bonface, I simply thought the role of soil was restricted to save and conserve living organisms in and out of it but I never knew that it could play a role in preventing further climate change.
I do think climate change itself has been prevented or thought to be prevented by some artificial or scientific methods but preserving healthy soil in large scale can bring better result in that campaign (Am I right?)
    Thanks for your report!

    Hey there Bonface!

Soil is an important tool for the environmental system to continue and to thrive. What you have mentioned about soil having a third function is very true. These micro organisms play their part in insuring that soil is compitent to deliver functions such as transforming nitrogen in the nitrification process and so forth.

So many employment fields focus on soil and it is a good site to see. I concur with you that the damages done to soil must be stopped as soon as possible, before it's too late.

Thank you for updating us with your report!
    Yours sincerely
    R.
