October 31st is celebrated as " World City Day". This day is celebrated with the main theme " Better City, Better Life". Sub theme is selected every year and the theme for this year is "Building Sustainable and Resilient Cities"
With the perspective to live better and quality life, the desire of the people to live a modern and city life has increase. In Nepal, Though the country is struggling so hard and lagging behind to meet the growing challenge of building basic infrastructure and facilities in the context of rising urbanization, many VDCs have turned out to municipalities. The number of municipalities already reaching 217 with 42% of the country's total population now living in urban areas. This situation is not going to stay static as the ever rising trend of moving towards urbanization continues and more villages may be oriented to become towns and cities. But it has invited problems like crimes, scarcity of basic necessities, unmanaged waste disposal, inadequate water supply, rise of squatter settlements, urban poverty and many more. So, a right approach is called for in push for accomplishing the goals of development or else sustain is not in endeavor. A long term vision and strict implementation of plans and project is in need so that we can make our dream come true. Its high time to think "Are we ready to make this world a better, sustained and resilient place to live in ?" |

Hello Kushal, in the past, well-planned cities with efficient irrigation, smooth traffic, dense transportation system were pointed out as 'best cities'. However, as public problems in cities including social, cultural, sanitation and environmental problems drastically increased, notion of 'best and better cities' has been redefined to 'the sustainable and clean cities with harmony'.
Though most of our daily living sectors have been convenient for all of us, I think we need to make our cities to 'sustainable' ones before it is too late.
Thanks for your report!

Hey Kushal!
Thank you for informing us of this day, it's good to see that that the Nation of Nepal is moving forward in urbanisation, but sadly, negative implications will always follow such as crimes and poor services. I hope that the roll out of strict laws are established and regulated in order for the Nation to continue flourishing.
Thank you so much for the report!
