LIGHT POLLUTION IN TAIWAN

by Elizaveta Zaretskaya | 02-10-2018 10:52 recommendations 0

Hi everyone! My name is Lisa Zaretskaya. I would like to draw your attention to my 2nd report related to LIGHT POLLUTION IN TAIWAN.

The second meeting of our ecological club in this new semester was devoted to LIGHT POLLUTION IN TAIWAN. The student Ludmila Lai made a report on this problem. (Sorry for being late but I was busy because of the school). Because Taipei city is such that the residential always mixes with the commercial, and since commercial buildings here often leave their lights on after closing, we have a really bad case of nightly light pollution. If you don?t have proper blinds and an eye mask, light sleepers and insomniacs may have a tough time sleeping. The Taipei City Department tries to regulate light pollution.

But guess who else suffers from this light pollution?  The birds! I was shocked to know that. Introducing electric light into the landscape and into the atmosphere, in the form of skyglow, can disrupt these cycles and patterns. Today, people are spilling massive amounts of money paying for electricity to light their store signs at night on streets where no one is walking or paying attention to stores that are shut tight till the morning. It?s a huge waste of personal resources and national stores of electricity, not to mention the light pollution!

So, what?s the solution? Taiwan needs codes and legislation around urban lighting. Store owners, residents, and skyscrapers, please turn your lights off at night! Save the money, and burn less coal in thermal power plants while you?re at it!

Thank you for your attention. Our marathon will be continued??

This is an interesting topic for us, Electrical engineers, since we are responsible for Plant electrification including lighting. As far as 2004, we had projects in USA, where light pollution was a big factor for us. Now there is a very interesting initiative called the International Dark Sky Association (http://darksky.org/) and you can join their email list for the latest developments. In USA, the lighting design is guided by IESNA (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America) who have introduced the BUG rating concept for rating of lamp fixtures. I would encourage you to read more about the BUG rating and understand the concept for outdoor lighting (http://shop.innovativelight.com/catalog/outdoor__roadway/performance_data/cutoff-and-bug-ratings/).
Happy reading, and if you have any questions, you can contact me at cherry.gupta@samsung.com. Happy reading!!

Hello Elizaveta, I totally agree with light pollution and its severe level. I do live in the middle of a huge city, one of the biggest cities in the world, and it often hinders my sleep since light keeps coming in my room through Though light-blocking curtains are built up inside room, light does exist still. The easiest way to solve this problem (as it is also a huge problem for the natural system and biorhythm of other creatures) must be regulating policies or laws to restrict the use of light after certain time till next morning. Other way might be legally binding the level of light under certain standard, so it can help animals not be interrupted from light pollution better than before!
Thanks for your report, and keep up with good seminar series! :)

    Hello Elizaveta!
Industrialization and urbanization has brought light in to the darkness of night times. Artificial lighting has brought lots of benefits to our lives but as too much of everything is bad, too much light is causing confusion in the eco-system.
Hope new policies could aid in solving this problem!
    Thanks for the report :)

    Hi Elizaveta!

Truely, light pollution is a big problem. I also didn't know that they pose a big problem to our birds. Stricter policies and legislation should be put on commercial use of lights for the well-being of the citizens and birds.

    Lovely report!

Hi Elizabeth! I had no idea that birds can somehow suffer from light pollution. Your report helped me figure it out. You are absolutely right, the problem is serious and needs to be solved.
