Dear Friends,

By this report, I want to get all my friends thinking and commenting about your views over the topic

WAS HURRICANE HARVEY CAUSED BY CLIMATE CHANGE

Some Important notes

Climate change remains a polarizing issue in USA and the views have already divided country.

A Cornell University expert agreed that Harvey was caused by a number of meteorological ingredients.  The climate change affected the strength and impacts of Harvey by warming the atmosphere and oceans and increasing sea levels.

Warmer air is capable of holding more water vapor which in turn means more rainfall. Warm water in the Gulf of Mexico provides a necessary ingredient for storm formation and strengthening. Storm surge flooding along the coast worsens as sea level rises.

Whether Hurricane Harvey was caused by climate change, cannot be confirmed but it is prudent to say that climate change worsened it.

Hi, Simran! Thanks for your report on the relationship between Hurricane Harvey and climate change. I also share the same thoughts as you, as I think that although climate change may not have been the sole cause of Hurricane Harvey, it surely has played a role in making the hurricane larger and more powerful. If we cannot deter global warming, the increase in temperature and rise in sea level are bound to make the upcoming hurricanes more deadly. This is a crucial time to acknowledge the dangerous effects of climate change and think of what we can do to fight against it. Nice work on your report!

Great report Simran, climate change played a critical role in that catastrophe, but the crucial thing the world must do is joining forces to fight disasters like hurricane harvey.

I think, it is due to the climate change because the temperature of earth is getting warmer day by day. This affects the atmosphere greatly. You should learn and be aware from the heinous devastation of harvey.

Hi, Simran! In my opinion, I think climate change is not the only but strongly effective condition which causes great scales of a natural disaster like Hurricane Harvey. And also it's true that increasing sea level and temperature of the ocean caused by recent climate change (e.g. global warming) contributed to the increased possibility of large scale disaster appearance. Of course, Hurricane is a natural phenomenon which happens every year usually near the sea side, but the problem is that damage we've got from it is gradually increasing. Thanks for your report :)

  • Arushi Madan says :
Hurricane Irma, following so closely after Tropical Storm Harvey and other extreme weather emergencies, has indeed prompted questions about the role of climate change. I feel that whether the climate change 'caused' any particular weather event might be debatable but there is no doubt how global warming has helped turn the hurricanes into even more destructive forces than they ever would have been before. Climate change works to heat the ocean and increase the sea levels. In turn, that helps to make the hurricane more devestating: more heat helps propel the power of the hurricane, leading to the kind of destruction that has made its way across the Americas twice over the last week. Climate change is increasing the probability of storms reaching an extremely high intensity.
    Thus 2 things are clear:
    1. As climate change continues, we should in one sense get used to and prepare for similar destruction in the future.
    2. We must strive to minimise climate change by reducing carbon emissions, planting more trees and saving the existing trees.
    Thanks for the report.

I agree, exclusive causation might be burdensome to prove, however, it is obvious that climate change played a huge factor in this catastrophe.

Great report Simran, really gets us thinking about how fatal climate change can be. Yes, I also agree that climate change may not have been the only cause of the Hurricane Harvey but definitely was a major factor contributing to it.
