Waste management in Nepal

by | 22-02-2014 14:11 recommendations 0

Waste management has been a severe problem in Nepal. Mostly in the city areas the places have been polluted with plastics and chemical waste whereas the villages are full of organic waste. But nowadays the villages also have the problem of chemical pollution. The poor management of solid waste in the country has lead to this embarrassing situation.

Firstly the government has not been able to utilize the full budget allocated for waste management. The people allocated for the management have not worked in an efficient or in wise manner. The decisions made by the top level decision makers have not formulated the proper plans in order to manage the solid waste. Also even the selection of waste deposition place in the capital in not so well and it has affected the people and the agricultural production around it.

In addition to that the people themselves are not aware and responsible about the waste and its management. The people do not bother to dispose waste at public places and even if people want to deposit there are no any dustbin inmost public places and the roads. Also people think that it is wiser to deposit waste at open space than paying money to governmental workers to manage waste at proper place.

People in Nepal need to learn about respecting public property and good utilization from it. I realized it when a tourist walking in the city carrying the empty cans as he had not found proper place to dispose it. The few public dustbins are destroyed and waste management in the roads has become more problems. We should not blame the government rather we should analyze our deeds first and then encourage other to do so before blaming the higher authority and in the same way the authority must do their work effectively.

Effective waste disposal starts at home. If everybody does it then city will be automatically cleaner. All the best for Nepal.

Thank you for sharing your insights about solid waste problem in Nepal's urban areas. As you pointed out, regulations and hardware(like properly located trash bins) should follow the development of people's awareness.

Oh , it's so disgusting to see waste disposed like this. Government /Nepal muniicpalities should be informed , chased and appealed to put the waste disposal bins at place. This is neither good for beauty , cleanliness nor for hygiene/health. Thanks for highlighting this , Sabin.
