calculating the environmental cost of one of human activities

Hey everyone, hope you all are doing fine and safe.  Today I will help you to visualize the impact on the environment because of daily human activities.  What we may not realize is that basic human activities like using the air conditioner, using electronic gadgets or even sending emails, has an impact on the environment.  Many activities produce a lot of carbon emissions, which in turn leads to more carbon dioxide in the air.  Ultimately all these lead to climate change.  Here a few activities and their emissions :

  • Consumption of red meat :  If you're eating 444 calories a day of red meat (the equivalent of about one 8-ounce steak sirloin), your annual meat-related carbon footprint is 0.8 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
  • Deforestation :  Forests are storehouses of carbon.  When forests are cleared or burnt, stored carbon is released into the atmosphere, mainly as carbon dioxide. Averaged over 2015 – 2017, global loss of tropical forests contributed about 4.8 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year (or about 8-10% of annual human emissions of carbon dioxide) (WRI 2018)

Tips to reduce your carbon emissions:

  • Reduce your consumption of red meat.
  • Switch off lights and when not required.
  • Try and reduce your carbon footprint by small changes in your daily routine
  • Use the air conditioner wisely

Hi Arjun Anand, this is a mentor, Sang Su Lee.

I was surprised to see that many seemingly trivial activities done by humans such as sending an email, eating a piece of red meat and so on have huge impacts on the environment by looking at your statistics. I believe that, therefore, it is imperative to consume products at adequate amount.

    Thank you for your rerport!

Hello Arjun Anand, this is mentor Taehyun!

Thank you for the article that told us about human activities that there are so many unexpected carbon footprints! Among the activities you suggested, meat consumption is especially bad because not only carbon but also forest area is reduced during logging and clearing of many rainforests to raise cattle. I think it's best to have an eco-friendly habit if possible!

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!
