Renewable Energy: Integrated Resource Plan(IRP)

by Xolani Mnisi | 20-12-2019 19:59 recommendations 0

The Integrated Resources Plan (IRP), a renewable energy blueprint which sustains its frontier within the energy space, introducing a new environment climate sphere dominance.

This is a policy of its late planned and introduced by the Republic of South Africa Department of Mineral Resources and Energy(DMRE). The policy outlines the guidelines of an energy mix development and sustainability system at which sets out to transform the state from a fossil fuel[coal]-orientated resource product into a renewable energy integrated element/s.

Promulgated and published of earlier recent months(September/October) of the year post national government cabinet approval, it was noted that the consultation and policy-making phases of this policy was encompassed sub substantiated basis of the imperative sense of need to diversify and transform towards an environmental free and fairly-tolerant climate and nature-understanding: a paradigm  shift towards an climate resilient and fostered path.

The Republic has and still is acknowledged for its immense contribution and reliance to/of coal usage in means for power production for mandated Sustainable Development Goals(SDG¡¯s) social and economic livelihood contribution sustainability, however, the state identifies a directive route that supposedly inlight to attain energy access and attainment to upkeep and contribute effectively a major shift towards a clean and green environmental friendly is one a urgent requirement to ensure an environmental friendly; one which is non hazardous but eloquent to sustain over the long-run.

The state also recognized that nuclear energy-a source predominately considered withnin the IRP program could only be retained as miniscule as best possibly  affordable since nature resources have to be resorted and revitalized in best eco-friendly rehabilitation means.

With the abundance of natural resources: sunlight, water and wind, these are and predominant potential which could yield yearned-for current and future success progress in longevity as the state accounts to have sufficient resources of this kind.

Thus, given the geographic climates, landscapes positions, and biodiversity biomes, a greater path for solar, hydro and wind farms are a notable positive factor to be highly and surely engaged unto.

Therefore, it is of the recent climate and  global warming results endured that expels inspiration for the government to embark upon such a projectable plan.  More so it indeed through the motivation and inspiration of the states astute international commitments and succumbs by agreements: the United Environmental Program(UNEP) SDG¡¯s, COP21&25 Paris Agreement notably; that the state wishes and is on path with the terms of migrating from fossil-led power to a green being eco-friendly energy source-a green economy.

Though a plethora of challenges appear and arise being disrupted in the process, be socio-economic standards: mining jobs losses, trade losses, disinvestments and non-stability in energy grid, it is a quite slow move, and as such, factors require timely process in engagements and integrated dialogue.

This is an eloquent reasoning point that satisfies the objective of negotiation with the labour sector, Unions in particular, whom have heavily criticized the ¡°move¡± as a socio-economic burdening force unto labour, should coal mining for energy production be erased in the end, spelling gravious peril ramification towards the social and economic stability of the state aswel.

However, given the mode and motive of the IRP, the government of the day has promised to extend consultation but also to upkeep and uphold the norms of an ecofriendly and green economy through a resilient renewable energy. However, all such leading to progressive and successful society and nation, world and universe for now and future generations to come, all in realization and achievement implementation and enforcement of the IRP.

    Hello Xolani

I think the purpose of IRP program in South Africa is great. From the view of government, I think it's really important to set the goals in variety of time scale and prepare for the changes in the long term. There are some countries that are leading in transition to renewable energy sources and I can see that South Africa is one of them. I hope the projects of South Africa end up with great success.

Thank you for the great report.
