Water-The Elixir of Life
Life, as we know it, is impossible without water. Two-thirds of our beautiful blue planet is covered with water. But, our fresh water is limited and sometimes it?s the case of water, water everywhere, not a drop to drink. Water in many places is contaminated and unfit to drink but people have no choice but make do. People trek long distances just to get a pot of water. Even in places with rivers flowing through, due to people?s negligence and callousness, they are contaminated and unfit to use.
It?s easy to advocate the necessity to use our resources carefully and sparingly, but when it comes to implementing them personally, it can be quite daunting and troublesome, at least initially until we get used to it. But without patience and belief that we can indeed regulate our usage, we tend to give in and get back to our old ways?? so in a way it?s a challenge that we need to rise up to.
It?ll be helpful to begin with small steps like using a bucket and a mug instead of long showers, brushing without letting tap water run continuously, using water efficient toilets, filling water in a pail or a bucket and using it to wash utensils, using the waste water to water our plants etc. The list of different ways in which we can use and reuse water can be quite surprising as we keep exploring.
The emerging trend of eco-friendly green homes is a wonderful way of exploring the many environment friendly ways in which we can live.
The place where I live i.e Visakhapatnam has abundant water during the rainy and winter seasons but during summer, we do experience trouble. People worry in summer but as monsoon sets in, they very conveniently forget the summer troubles. Instead, when we have plenty of water, if we take up programs like rain water harvesting in every household, apartment complex and even office buildings, we can help in maintaining the water table thereby reducing water shortage in summer. Hopefully, people will wake up to this fact. Another way of regulating the usage of water is by imposing water tax.
On ?THE WORLD WATER DAY?, we conducted a special assembly in our school and put posters and slogans in all the notice boards urging our friends to take the message to their family and neighbours. We requested our school authorities to get some dripping taps repaired and thankfully they were done immediately.
