Bee'ah's tyre recycling facility to boost green revolution

by Arushi Madan | 04-08-2014 13:43 recommendations 0

Bee'ah (Sharjah's waste management company) is always at the forefront in providing innovative waste management solutions and following environmental best practices to achieve their "2015 Mission: Zero Waste to Landfill"

Bee'ah  has the largest waste management centre at Sajja which I visited last year. And to provide practical solutions to future energy challenges , Bee'ah is working at fast pace and making sustainable material out of recycled stuff e.g. the sustainable rubber tiles made out of recycled tyres at their Tyre Recycling Facility(TRF).

To save millions in raw material costs and keep scrap tyres out of landfills, Bee'ah  has the first of it's kind in the region , high-tech Tyre Recycling Facility (TRF), which uses an eco-friendly cryogenic process to recycle about 3 million used tyres a year and convert them into crumb rubber or crumb rubber tiles suitable for different applications and flooring products.

The cryogenic process — which, on average, lasts a total of 40 minutes — uses liquid nitrogen to flash freeze the tyres at minus 196 degrees Celsius.

From there, they become brittle and are broken down like glass, by cracker mills, into crumb granules varying between 0.6mm to 4 mm in size.

Mega tyres used in industrial and construction vehicles are also being processed at Bee'ah's Tyre Recycling Facility by employing an Oversize Tyre Reduction system (OTR).

Recycled Rubber Mulch is used as rubber horse footing in arenas and pens. It is considered the safest and sturdiest flooring material for equestrian surfaces.

Crumb rubber and crumb rubber tiles can be used for different applications and flooring products in running tracks, grass-surfaced playing areas, stadium playing areas, miniature golf courses and in artificial turf infill in local schools, parks and athletic facilities.

In Sharjah, a total of 6,000 recycled tyres were used to make the 3,000 square metre running track in well known public park "Al Majaz Waterfront Park ".

A floor was built at another public play area "Al Qasba's play area" using crumb rubber tiles made of around 1,500 tyres.

Bee'ah is also using crumb rubber-blended asphalt to build new roads in Sharjah, as they are cost-effective and long-lasting.

A number of schools, parks, athletic facilities, municipalities and equestrian areas across the emirate of Sharjah continue to significantly benefit from these tyre-derived sustainable materials.

The TRF is the best solution to recycle the millions of tyres currently stored at the Bee'ah Waste Management Center, and helps avoid valuable land space, prevents a fire hazard, and if co-mingled with garbage, can provide a habitat for mosquitoes, rats and other vermin.

Tyre recycling facilityis really inteteresting. The most important part of it is it recycles the unwanted tyres and produces many usable materials. such initiatives are necessary in sustainable development. Thank you Arushi for sharing such a wonderful and inspiring innovation.
