Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and His Views on Renewable Sources of Energy

by | 04-08-2014 01:00 recommendations 0

On August 1st 2014, the Honorable Dr. Avul Pakhir Jalaudin Abdul Kalam, former President of India visited my school. Dr. Kalam has been the former Head of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and is commonly know as the Missile Man Of India, thanks to his contribution in developing over 15 types missiles. He is a senior scientist in nuclear physics. He spoke about the importance of Nuclear energy ind India.

At my school, Dr. Kalam spoke about renewable sources of energy. Their need is being felt more than ever in today's growing world. The 21st century has given us comforts and luxuries that come at a heavy price, and this price is environmental loss. The economic value of our oceans is $30 billion but their environmental value is priceless. In a country such as India, where the population exceeds 1.2 billion, efficient use of energy is important for sustainable development.

Solar energy in India accounted for less than 1% of total energy production in 2007. By January 2014 the installed grid connected solar power had increased to 2,208.36 MW.Today, India has been ranked number one in terms of solar energy production per watt installed. India is endowed with economically exploitable and viable hydro potential assessed to be about 84,000 MW. The present installed capacity as on September 30, 2013 is approximately 39,788.40 MW which is 17.39% of total electricity generation in India.

Currently there are 20 nuclear reactors in India producing about 30000 GWh of electricity. 6 other reactors are under construction.  Nuclear power is the 4th largest source of energy in India. The Govt. of India has kept in mind the large number of problems that arise due to nuclear energy, evident form incidents such as 3/11 in Japan. The Govt. has given due consideration to the public safety while making such reactors.

All these sources of energy account for less than 50% of energy production in India. The rest 50% is produced through fossil fuel and other environmentally harmful substances. In the near future, I hope India achieves a sustainable plan for environment friendly energy production.

At the end of the program, Dr. Kalam was gifted a painting by a student. The painting depicts the home city of Dr. Kalam which is Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu State. It is one of the most environment friendly city in India.

In India energy will be big issue because the increasing population is demanding energy as their needs. Also increasing the number of industry will definitely demand more energy. Instead of nuclear and fossil fuel India should focus on the Hydropower project and Solar Power which are eco friendly and economic also. Thanks for sharing the information .

Our family has the honor of meeting Dr. Kalam 2 times in Dubai. He is indeed a towering personality.
India is increasing the Nuclear energy production & also augmenting its clean energy sources.. In years to come it will be a sustainable nation.

Congratulations for India, it's No.1 country in production of electricity produced by solar power. Impressive! Still there's long way to go for spread the use of solar power, the trend seems very hopeful. Thank you for sharing the informative article :D

Thanks for sharing the events with Dr.abdul kalam. its really important to emphasize in the renewable energy and reduce the use of fossils fuel, and solar energy is one of the best alternative source and should be given more priority.

Thank you for sharing the scenarios of energy sources in India. I hope India will be able to reduce the 50% energy source from fossil fuel and other harmful method and will be adoopting a renewable energy sources. You are blessed to have such a great personality as a former president.

Congrats for getting an opportunity to see Dr Kalam in person. I really look upto him. He is one of my role models.
Thanks for sharing about this event. Less than 50% of India's energy production is from alternative sources of energy which is not bad . India is working on it and hopefully this % will go up in future to make India a great sustainable nation.
