NIGERIA DRAINAGES AND ITS CHALLENGES

by | 05-08-2014 13:08 recommendations 0

The drainage system here in Nigeria has been one I have been talking on for a long time and it's because of its great importance in achieving a healthy and sustainable environment for my country.
Drainage channels in Nigeria are,no doubt, very vital in any environmental policy of the government this is because, as a developing country, we are still trying to construct accessible roads to connect all nooks and crannies of the country and going simultaneously with the road construction,is the construction of drainage channels which helps in collecting and channelling of flood waters to their appropriate destination.

However, one challenge Nigeria is facing in this regard is the poor use of the drainage system by her people.
Before now, people effortlessly make use of drainage channels as dump sites where all manner of wastes are disposed. Be it biodegradable or non-biodegradable, all they cared for was to ensure that the waste leaves their houses or shops. Then, the usual practise during the raining season was to pack all your waste and wait for the rain to come. Immediately it starts raining heavily, you see people come out with their umbrellas to pour all their wastes into the gutters believing that the flood water will take it to its right destination. This they did happily without realizing how bad a practice it was until recently, with increased awareness, the majority of the people have not just stopped disposing wastes into the gutters, but are now more careful with their method of waste disposal as well as their use of the drainage channels.

But then, there is another challenge for the drainage system in Nigeria the growth of weeds in some drainage channels. You know Nigeria is a country blessed with mineral and soil resources but the latter's abundance ensures that our drainage systems continue to experience this challenge.
Now,due to the abundance of soil in all parts of the country, the sands are easily transported via car tyres, foot wears and what have you, to the major asphalted roads such that when it rains, the sand is easily washed down into the gutters and over a long period of time, the sand accumulates and starts blocking the drainage channels and as soon as the sand accumulates just a little, some stubborn weeds starts growing on them and that gives room for the branches of these weeds to further block materials carried by the flood when it rains hence accumulating unnecessary wastes in the gutters.

Worst still, the government that is in charge of such drainages hardly get to know of these situations until the drainage is completely blocked by the accumulation of solid non-biodegradable wastes which then forces flood water to flow on the road instead of going through the gutters as they are now blocked owing to the accumulated waste deposit occasioned by the growth of weeds in the gutters. This has been a major challenge for a good number of drainage systems in Nigeria, especially ones that flank remote roads.

I have identified "cleaning up drainage channels" as a vital point in the next phase of my awareness campaign and I hope to do it in conjunction with state governments here to ensure that our drainages not only last, but are kept clean and free.
This is one way of achieving sustainable environment here in Nigeria and I am very serious  about it.

Udeh, first of all, I must appreciate your constant attention and effort made on the drainage system. You are a real asset for your country! And thank you so much for the detail and informative article.

In Korea, the situation was a lot similar in dumping trashes in the past. But it gradually improved by many campaigns and educations. So be positive, your work will bear great results :D
