The government in UAE has already been working a lot towards sustainability which was evident in the past few years. Now the capital of UAE, Abu Dhabi has also taken a step towards sustainability by assuring that their beaches remain clean, healthy and safe.
With 24 beachfronts under the capital this wise step was taken very recently and the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority in collaboration with the Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi have introduced a set of International Standards to ensure sustainability and a pollution-free environment in the beautiful beaches. These guidelines are called Management of Beach Water Quality for Human Health and are compulsory for all the 24 beaches in Abu Dhabi. 13 of the 24 beaches are in the Island of Abu Dhabi. The phenomenon of beach pollution is very common all oer the world and now that these guidelines have been introduced, EAD(Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi) shall monitor the water pollution and the overall health of the particular beach. These guidelines consist of 28 pages and will be forwarded to all resorts in the capital. The Foundation for Environmental Education(FEE) has started an initiative called the Blue Flag which is awarded to a beach if the 32 criteria are met with concerning the water pollution level, overall safety and the environmental education. 2 of Abu Dhabi's beaches have already been bestowed with this certification and are assessed by the FEE team every 28 Days. The Bateen beach and the Corniche beach are the beaches that boast the Blue Flag. The Blue Flag guidelines have been somewhat added into the Management of Beach Water Quality for Human Health guidelines whichh include evaluation of the beaches every bathing season. Even though I live in Sharjah, which is a 2-hour drive from Abu Dhabi, I sometimes go and visit the beautiful Corniche and the beaches. Personally I feel that this step would be very effective ensuring the health and safety of the citizens, residents and tourists of Abu Dhabi and sincerely hope that initiatives like these are not only practiced in UAE but all over the world so that we live in a truly sustainable environment.
