Conservation of Seagrass in Mexico

by | 01-09-2014 03:09 recommendations 0

Seagrasses are aquatic phanerogams characteristics of brackish water and marine areas. Mexico has a variety of seagrass species, higher than elsewhere nine of the twelve species inhabiting the shores of North America, are in the country.

These aquatic habitats are of great importance because of their productivity, holding large concentrations of marine species of commercial value, non-commercial (shrimp, shark, Gulf corvina, snapper, snook, mullet, octopus, catarina scallop, clam chocolate, etc.), well as migratory and resident birds, reptiles, invertebrates and mammals, of which some of them are protected by Mexican law, such as the manatee (Trichechus manatus), sea turtles, Brant (Branta bernicla) and between other.

The Northwest Region of Mexico, on the Pacific coast has been reported Phyllospadix scouleri and P. torreyi on the west coast of Baja California. Zostera marina has also been observed on the coast of Sonora and Sinaloa. In the Gulf of California has been reported Halodule wrightii, also on the coasts of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Campeche and Yucatan.

The actions represent a threat to seagrass beds in the Northwest Region of Mexico, are the tourism and industrial coastal development and fishing activities, to the point of damaging them or replace them disappear extensive local or regional areas. EI impact of this change is intense and developed active restoration techniques to recover them

Mexican environmental legislation and management plans for marine protected areas should include seagrass communities as a key coastal ecosystem to ensure the permanence of marine biodiversity. Must designate areas where fishing entices or urban development is not permitted. It should promote the application of techniques and the use of fishing gear that do not destroy the seabed and its inhabitants. In wetlands, as Magdalena Bay, which are not part of a marine protected area should be even more careful or else environmental degradation could be severe in the coming years.

Seagrasses and other natural resources deserve special and particular attention within the national policy that recognizes their values and establish policies and procedures that meet the minimum requirements that must be met to ensure their preservation.

This policy must be supported by up to date information to support the establishment of programs to manage seagrasses real basis at regional and national level and should consider their extent and distribution (inventory), and identify which are suitable methods for diagnosis and environmental characterization of seagrasses, as they are key factors to propose management strategies, either towards the sustainable conservation or toward restoration. This is based on the premise that we can not preserve something we do not know, nor can we sustainably manage something that we ignore. It is why we attach great importance to design and develop a "'National Strategy for the Conservation of Seagrass Priority" in Mexico.

Thanks , Angela , for interesting report . Agree with you that Seagrasses form one of the most productive plant communities on the planet , performing important ecological functions. Seagrass beds are valuable resource , critical to the health & function of coastal waters. Greater awareness and public education is essential for consrevation of this resource. National Strategy for the Conservation of Seagrass Priority , is a good idea to sincerely and seriously
    work towards seagrass conservation.
